A computer-based method for assisting a user in making decisions in the process of completing a task is shown and described. The method of the system includes providing a set of questions for completing the task, asking the user a first question from the set, and providing a choice of answers to the first question. The system also provides advice from its knowledge base for deciding which of the answers to the first question to select. The choice of answer, however, remains under the control of the user, who can exercise professional judgment based on the user's expertise and the advice provided by the decision management system. The method continues by asking following questions, with the following questions, answers and advice influenced by the user's previous answers. Throughout the decision-making process, the user retains control of the answers if so desired, with the system providing advice from its knowledge base. The system is particularly suited for document assembly in allowing an experienced lawyer or other professional to determine what provisions are suitable for a document to be built from information and judgments provided by the lawyer or other professional and the knowledge base of the system. The system also includes an authoring program for preparing applications that run on the system. Using an intuitive program block approach of the authoring tool, an author can construct an application by placing questions, answer choices, advice and textual and logical provisions in named program blocks. The author then assembles and arranges these blocks to build a desired application program. The logic of the application is easily accessible and simple to review, allowing efficient editing and error-checking.

An interactive computerized document assembly system includes a model template formed of a sequence of sections and having decisional options including clause repeats and conditional clauses and questions to be answered for a document to be assembled; as well as functions for indicating the location in the model template for the decisional options to identify the sequence of sections constituting the model template; a video display for displaying a portion of the template; an answer index for storing answers to questions posed in the portion of the template displayed, each of the questions having a unique identifier; merging with each displayed section or part thereof the answers corresponding to each displayed section or part thereof; and combining and redisplaying in sequence each displayed merged section or part thereof in order to assemble a document from the model template.

This paper describes an interpreter for ABF, a language for constructing legal documents. The ABF language defines both commands to develop documents and commands to manipulate those documents. The language has typical programming constructs for sequence, selection, and repetition but also allows the user other capabilities to aid in document construction; the user can modify the program while it is running (change the document while it is being processed), type the variables during the initial processing of a document, and then change the type during later processing, enter commands that require a change of context during the processing of a document, output a document with variables still undefined. A document is constructed using conditional and repeat statements and incorporation of other documents by reference. Data types include documents, strings, numbers, dollar amounts and logical values. Arrays can be formed for all types except documents. There are three forms of subprograms: documents can be incorporated by reference in other documents at any point at which a variable name is permitted; rules (subprocedures) for computing values can be attached to any variable; and alternate questions can be attached to variables in a similar manner. The ABF system queries the user for any values needed to complete a document; questions are generated from variable names.

Interpreting ABF—a language for document construction

The ABF system, named after the American Bar Foundation, its first sponsor, was designed to aid lawyers and paralegals in the compilation of legal documents. The ABF interpreter processes a skeleton document from a library of templates, and automatically generates questions about whatever client-specific information is needed to produce a client-customized document, ready to be formatted. The user can interrupt the processor at any point to change the document; the system will then reprocess the new document using answers to questions asked previously. The templates in the ABF System Library may contain conditional expressions, loops, and complicated arithmetic expressions, like those sometimes needed in tax computations. Other documents may be included by reference. The goal is to make model documents written by legal experts available to lawyers in small offices and to law students.
