Production of 'hybrid' antibiotics by genetic engineering.
David A. Hopwood,Francisco Malpartida,H. M. Kieser,Haruo Ikeda,J. Duncan,I. Fujii,Brian A. M. Rudd,Heinz G. Floss,Satoshi Omura +8 more
TL;DR: The production of novel compounds by gene transfer between strains producing the isochromanequinone antibiotics actinorhodin, granaticin13 and medermycin14 is reported, believed to be the first report of the production of hybrid antibiotics by genetic engineering.

Biosynthesis of anthraquinones by interspecies cloning of actinorhodin biosynthesis genes in streptomycetes: clarification of actinorhodin gene functions.
Paul L. Bartel,Chun-Bao Zhu,J. S. Lampel,Donald C. Dosch,Neal C. Connors,William R. Strohl,J. M. Beale,Heinz G. Floss +7 more
TL;DR: A pathway for the biosynthesis of actinorhodin and related compounds by S. coelicolor is suggested and experiments indicate a function for the actIII gene, which is the reduction of the keto group at C-9 from the carboxy terminus of the assembled polyketide to the corresponding secondary alcohol.
