An arrangement for bidirectionally driving a hammer bank shuttle assembly along a linear path in a line printer includes an opposite pair of circular, rotatable elements having an elongated shuttle assembly mounting element and an elongated counterbalancing element extending between the pair of rotatable elements on the opposite sides thereof. Pole pieces and a magnet disposed between and adjacent the shuttle assembly mounting element and the counterbalancing element provide magnetic flux which flows through portions of the opposite elements to attract and maintain the elements in contact with the opposite rotatable elements. A pair of serially coupled coils mounted on the counterbalancing element and disposed within the air gaps formed by the pole pieces and the magnet are energized by a cyclically varying signal to bidirectionally drive the shuttle assembly mounting element and its included hammer bank shuttle assembly along the linear path as the counterbalancing element is caused to reciprocate between opposite limits of movement defined by an opposite pair of resilient elements in the path of movement of the counterbalancing element. In an alternative embodiment the coils are disposed between the counterbalancing element and the shuttle assembly mounting element so as to form air gaps with and magnetically interact with a first pair of magnets mounted in spaced-apart relation along the length of the counterbalancing element and a second pair of magnets mounted in spaced-apart relation along the length of the shuttle assembly mounting element.

A serial line printer uses a linear stepper motor of the variable reluctance type in which the toothed stator bar acts as a guide and support for the print mechanism carrier. Sensor elements movable with the carrier sense the presence of the teeth of the stator bar and generate timing signals usable for controlling operation of the printer and the motion of the carrier. The pitch of the teeth in the stator bar is proportional to the spacing of the print locations in a line of print.

This invention relates to an improved mechanism for driving the print head of a printer and is particularly adapted for bidirectionally driving the print head of a wire matrix printer. The mechanism includes a bi-directional motor, preferably a DC motor, which is coupled to the print head. When a print operation is to be performed, the motor is started running in a first direction, causing the print head to move across a print line in a first direction. A first detector is provided for detecting when the print head reaches a predetermined point of a print line when being driven in the first direction, the motor being energized in response to an output from the first detector for reversing its direction of energization for a period of time at least sufficient to overcome the inertia of the print head in the first direction and for substantially stopping the print head. For the preferred embodiment, the motor continues running in its reverse direction to drive the head in its opposite direction, with a second detector being provided to detect the print head reaching a predetermined point on the print line when being driven in the opposite direction. The motor is energized in response to an output from the second detector to again run in the first direction for a period of time at least sufficient to substantially stop the print head.

A magnetic field structure for printers has a pair of opposed Ushaped pole pieces arranged to form a parallel pair of extended gaps in which high flux density exists. In one embodiment of a dot matrix printer, a single, narrow, vertical blade disposed to strike against raised portions of a drum is pivotally mounted on a carriage which rides along one pole piece. A flat, rectangular coil is disposed in the magnet gaps with one end of the coil connected to the hammer blade.

A linear actuator for positioning a print assembly parallel to a line on which characters are being printed is disclosed. The linear actuator includes a three-sided open structure magnetic circuit fabricated from rectangular pieces of slab magnets positioned about a central return path. The print assembly is seated on the open side of said linear actuator. Cooling for the actuator is achieved by pulling air in a direction perpendicular to the direction of motion of said print assembly.

The hammer module is carried across the paper by a coil which moves within a track extending parallel to the print line and formed by parts of pole pieces arranged to provide magnetic fields spaced along and extending across the track in alternating opposite directions. A U-shaped ceramic permanent magnet encloses portions of a pole piece of one polarity while portions of the pole piece of the other polarity surround the outside surface of the U-shaped magnet. Energization of the coil in alternate directions causes the hammer module to move in successive increments.
