An industrially advantageous production process which is an improved process for the production of an optically active α-amino-e-caprolactam (ACL). By the process, a desired optically active isomer having a high optical purity can be obtained with the aid of an optical resolver available at low cost in a large amount. An optically active phenylalanine derivative, in particular, N-p-toluenesulfonyl-L-phenylalanine, is used as a resolver to optically resolve DL-ACL by the diastereomeric method. A solvent having a permittivity suitably selected is used as a reaction medium for this optical resolution to precipitate a diastereomeric salt. Thus, a diastereomeric salt containing D-ACL or L-ACL can be selectively obtained.

The present invention provides: a polysaccharide derivative containing a structure wherein hydrogen atoms in a hydroxyl group or amino group at the 2-position and the 3-position of a structure unit of polysaccharide are substituted with different substituents respectively represented by a specific general formula; and, a separating agent for optical isomers, which contains such a polysaccharide derivative. The present invention can provide a novel polysaccharide derivative which has excellent optical isomer separating ability, and is thus suitable for a separating agent for optical isomers, and can provide a separating agent for optical isomers which comprises the polysaccharide derivative.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for dividing optical isomers. SOLUTION: This method is based on an adsorption, distillation, absorption or membrane-aided separation to divide optical isomers by bringing a mixture containing optical isomers counter-currently with a classificating solution composed of a classificating agent and diluent, and to recover the classificating solution containing the isomers at 5 wt.% or less, wherein at least one of the following conditions is satisfied: (a) the diluent has a relative dielectric constant of 30 or less, and classificating solution has a viscosity of 0.2 Pa.s or less at division operating temperature, (b) the classificating solution is composed of the classificating agent having an effect of splitting 1H- or 13C-NMR spectral peak, and diluent whose relative dielectric constant is the same as, or lower than, that of the solvent used for measuring 1H- or 13C-NMR spectral pattern, (c) the classificating agent has a lower boiling point than the diluent at division operating pressure, (d) the diluent has at least 10 deg.C higher boiling point than any of the optical isomers at division operating pressure, and (e) the classificating solution contains the classificating agent at 10 wt.% or more.
