Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): An essential nutrient and a nutraceutical for brain health and diseases
Grace Y. Sun,Agnes Simonyi,Kevin L. Fritsche,Dennis Y. Chuang,Mark Hannink,Zezong Gu,C. Michael Greenlief,Jeffrey K. Yao,James C. Lee,David Q. Beversdorf +9 more
TL;DR: Recent studies elaborating mechanisms whereby DHA may serve as a nutraceutical and confer neuroprotective effects with special regard to aging and Alzheimer's disease, autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, and stroke are described.

Effects of fatty acid unsaturation numbers on membrane fluidity and α-secretase-dependent amyloid precursor protein processing.
TL;DR: It is suggested that not all unsaturated fatty acids but only those with 4 or more double bonds, such as AA, EPA and DHA, are able to increase membrane fluidity and lead to increase in sAPP(α) secretion.

Quercetin Attenuates Inflammatory Responses in BV-2 Microglial Cells: Role of MAPKs on the Nrf2 Pathway and Induction of Heme Oxygenase-1.
Grace Y. Sun,Zihong Chen,Kimberly J. Jasmer,Dennis Y. Chuang,Zezong Gu,Mark Hannink,Agnes Simonyi +6 more
TL;DR: Results suggest an important role of quercetin to regulate inflammatory responses in microglial cells and its ability to upregulate HO-1 against endotoxic stress through involvement of MAPKs.
Polyphenols in cerebral ischemia: novel targets for neuroprotection.
Agnes Simonyi,Qun Wang,Rebecca L. Miller,Mozow Yusof,Phullara B. Shelat,Albert Y. Sun,Grace Y. Sun +6 more
TL;DR: There is increasing evidence supporting the hypothesis that plant polyphenols can provide protection against neurodegenerative changes associated with cerebral ischemia, and this article reviews the neuroprotective effects of plant extracts and their constituents that have been used in animal models of cerebral isChemia.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines and lipopolysaccharide induce changes in cell morphology, and upregulation of ERK1/2, iNOS and sPLA2-IIA expression in astrocytes and microglia
Wenwen Sheng,Yijia Zong,Arwa Mohammad,Deepa Ajit,Jiankun Cui,Dongdong Han,Jennifer L Hamilton,Agnes Simonyi,Albert Y. Sun,Zezong Gu,Jau-Shyong Hong,Gary A. Weisman,Grace Y. Sun +12 more
TL;DR: These results demonstrated the utility of BV-2 and HAPI cells as models for investigation on cytokine and LPS induction of iNOS, and DITNC astrocytes for induction of sPLA2-IIA.
