A system is disclosed for recognizing a pattern in a collection of data given a context of one or more other patterns previously identified. Preferably the system is a speech recognition system, the patterns are words and the collection of data is a sequence of acoustic frames. During the processing of each of a plurality of frames, for each word in an active vocabulary, the system updates a likelihood score representing a probability of a match between the word and the frame, combines a language model score based on one or more previously recognized words with that likelihood score, and prunes the word from the active vocabulary if the combined score is below a threshold. A rapid match is made between the frames and each word of an initial vocabulary to determine which words should originally be placed in the active vocabulary. Preferably the system enables an operator to confirm the system's best guess as to the spoken word merely by speaking another word, to indicate that an alternate guess by the system is correct by typing a key associated with that guess, and to indicate that neither the best guess nor the alternate guesses was correct by typing yet another key. The system includes other features, including ones for determining where among the frames to look for the start of speech, and a special hardware processor for computing likelihood scores.

A text editor is connected to a speech recognizing unit for editing preferably spoken input text using a display speech. For each text word (including digits), and each punctuation mark that can be recognized and is contained in a dictionary, a token is stored for holding information on character count, capitalization, left and right concatenation of the respective item, and for providing fields for context conditions. For each segment or entity recognized spoken text, a respective character string and associated token is transferred to storage in the editor to allow automatic formatting and correct displaying or printing of the text, including spaces and capitalization where required. Tokens are updated during editing to reflect modifications such as in the beginning of a sentence or in concatenation. Switching to spelling mode is provided for entering single spelled characters in case where a word cannot be recognized or where spelling is desired.

The invention also includes a method for achieving continouous speech recognition by characterizing speech as a sequence of confluent links which are matched with candidate words. The invention also applies to isolated word speech recognition as with continuous speech recognition, except that in such case there are no boundary links.

Speech recognition system with efficient storage and rapid assembly of phonological graphs

An apparatus is disclosed for receiving and processing transmitted electromagnetic waves, for example transmitted radio signals which contain audio information including recognizable speech information. In accordance with the invention, there are provided first and second spaced antennas. Switching means are provided for coupling either the first or the second antenna to a common channel. Signal processing means are provided for processing the signals on the common channel. Means are provided for comparing the signal on the common channel with a predetermined threshold condition and for generating a control signal in response to the comparison. Finally, means are provided for applying the control signal to the switching means to control selection of the first or second antenna. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, the comparator means comprises means for comparing the energy level of the signal at the common channel with a predetermined energy threshold. During operation, the antenna which is active at a particular time will remain active (i.e. coupled to the common channel) so long as the received radio frequency energy, at the characteristic transmission frequency, remains above the predetermined threshold level. If the level of received energy at this characteristic frequency falls below the predetermined threshold level (for example, by virtue of the antenna momentarily being in a multipath "dead" spot), the comparator means will sense this condition and operate the switch such that the other antenna is coupled to the common channel and becomes active. In another form of the invention the signal processing means includes means for generating an automatic gain control (AGC) signal which depends upon the instantaneous level of the signal on the common channel. A signal derived from the AGC signal is compared with a threshold signal that depends upon a predetermined reference, and a control signal is generated when the signal derived from the AGC signal exceeds the threshold signal.

Receiving apparatus having a plurality of antennas

An apparatus for recognizing the occurrence of a command word within continuous speech, features an improved sequential processing of feature signals derived from the input speech: feature subsets are compared with previously stored subset signals to determine the time interval or boundary of command word candidates. The occurrence decision and indication of the command word is made from a comparison of a feature signal matrix versus a previously stored training matrix.
