Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry applied to virus identification
Adriana Calderaro,Maria Cristina Arcangeletti,Isabella Rodighiero,Mirko Buttrini,Chiara Gorrini,Federica Motta,Diego Germini,M.C. Medici,Carlo Chezzi,Flora De Conto +9 more
TL;DR: The results revealed MALDI-TOF MS to be an effective and inexpensive tool for the identification of the three poliovirus serotypes, highlighting its value as a time-saving, sensitive and specific technique when compared to the gold standard neutralization assay and casting new light on its possible application to virus detection and/or identification.
Control of human cytomegalovirus gene expression by differential histone modifications during lytic and latent infection of a monocytic cell line.
E. S. Ioudinkova,Maria Cristina Arcangeletti,Alla Rynditch,Alla Rynditch,Flora De Conto,Federica Motta,Silvia Covan,F. Pinardi,Sergey V. Razin,Sergey V. Razin,Carlo Chezzi +10 more
TL;DR: Data strongly suggest that K9 methylation of H3 is involved in HCMV gene repression, while association of the above genes with acetylated histones is likely to be necessary for active transcription.

Accurate identification of the six human Plasmodium spp. causing imported malaria, including Plasmodium ovale wallikeri and Plasmodium knowlesi
Adriana Calderaro,Giovanna Piccolo,Chiara Gorrini,Sabina Rossi,Sara Montecchini,Maria Loretana Dell’Anna,Flora De Conto,Maria Cristina Medici,Carlo Chezzi,Maria Cristina Arcangeletti +9 more
TL;DR: Real-time PCR assays specific for P. ovale wallikeri and P. knowlesi were included in the panel currently used in the University Hospital of Parma for the diagnosis of imported malaria, accomplishing the goal of adhering to the recommendations of the World Health Organization to countries that are malaria-free to include the improvement of the early diagnosis of all cases of import malaria.
Molecular epidemiology of norovirus infections in sporadic cases of viral gastroenteritis among children in Northern Italy.
Maria Cristina Medici,Monica Martinelli,Laura Anna Abelli,Franco Maria Ruggeri,Ilaria Di Bartolo,Maria Cristina Arcangeletti,F. Pinardi,Flora De Conto,Giancarlo Izzi,Sergio Bernasconi,Carlo Chezzi,Giuseppe Dettori +11 more
TL;DR: Since the severity of norovirus symptoms does not usually require admission to hospital, the burden ofnorovirus disease in the general children population may be much higher than that suggested by the present hospital‐based investigation.

Identification of the novel Kawasaki 2014 GII.17 human norovirus strain in Italy, 2015
Maria Cristina Medici,Fabio Tummolo,Adriana Calderaro,Maria Chironna,Giovanni M. Giammanco,Simona De Grazia,Maria Cristina Arcangeletti,Flora De Conto,Carlo Chezzi,Vito Martella +9 more
TL;DR: This novel strain emerged as a major cause of gastroenteritis in Asia during 2014/15, replacing the pandemic GII.4 norovirus strain Sydney 2012, but being reported only sporadically elsewhere.
