Dual role of novel ingenol derivatives from Euphorbia tirucalli in HIV replication: inhibition of de novo infection and activation of viral LTR.
Celina M. Abreu,Sally Price,Erin N. Shirk,Rodrigo Delvecchio da Cunha,Luiz Francisco Pianowski,Janice E. Clements,Amilcar Tanuri,Lucio Gama +7 more
TL;DR: Three novel diterpenes isolated from the sap of Euphorbia tirucalli, a tropical shrub are described, which appear to be less cytotoxic than other diter penes such as PMA and prostratin, with effective dose versus toxic dose TI>400 and the mechanisms of action are primarily attributed to the PKC pathway.

Monocyte-derived macrophages contain persistent latent HIV reservoirs
Rebecca T. Veenhuis,Celina Monteiro Abreu,Edna A. Ferreira,Janaysha Ratliff,L. Pohlenz,Erin N. Shirk,Leah H. Rubin,Joel N. Blankson,Lucio Gama,Janice E. Clements +9 more
TL;DR: In this article , a human monocyte-derived macrophage quantitative viral outgrowth assay (MDM-QVOA) and highly sensitive T cell detection assays were used to confirm purity.
Myeloid and CD4 T Cells Comprise the Latent Reservoir in Antiretroviral Therapy-Suppressed SIVmac251-Infected Macaques
Celina M. Abreu,Rebecca T. Veenhuis,Claudia R. Avalos,Shelby Graham,Daymond R. Parrilla,Edna A. Ferreira,Suzanne E. Queen,Erin N. Shirk,Brandon T. Bullock,Ming Li,Kelly A. Metcalf Pate,Sarah E. Beck,Lisa M. Mangus,Joseph L. Mankowski,Feilim Mac Gabhann,Shelby L. O’Connor,Lucio Gama,Lucio Gama,Janice E. Clements +18 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that CD4+ T cells and macrophages found throughout tissues in the body can contain replication-competent SIV and contribute to rebound of the virus after treatment interruption.

Expansion of a subset of CD14highCD16negCCR2low/neg monocytes functionally similar to myeloid-derived suppressor cells during SIV and HIV infection
Lucio Gama,Lucio Gama,Erin N. Shirk,Julia N. Russell,Karina I. Carvalho,Ming Li,Suzanne E. Queen,Jorge Kalil,M. Christine Zink,Janice E. Clements,Esper G. Kallas +10 more
TL;DR: This work identified and characterized the expansion of a novel monocyte subset during HIV and SIV infection, which were undistinguishable from classical monocytes, based on CD14 and CD16 expression, but expressed significantly lower surface CCR2.

A Murine Viral Outgrowth Assay to Detect Residual HIV Type 1 in Patients With Undetectable Viral Loads.
Kelly A. Metcalf Pate,Christopher W. Pohlmeyer,Victoria E. Walker-Sperling,Jeremy B. Foote,Kevin Najarro,Catherine G. Cryer,Maria Salgado,Lucio Gama,Elizabeth L. Engle,Erin N. Shirk,Suzanne E. Queen,Stanley Chioma,Meghan S. Vermillion,Brandon T. Bullock,Ming Li,Claire E. Lyons,Robert J. Adams,M. Christine Zink,Janice E. Clements,Joseph L. Mankowski,Joel N. Blankson +20 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the murine viral outgrowth assay (MVOA) has the potential to serve as a powerful tool to identify residual HIV in patients with undetectable viral loads.
