Detecting deficits in reading and writing literacy skills has been of great interest in the scientific community to correlate executive functions with future academic skills. In the present study, a prototype of a serious multimedia runner-type game was developed, Play with SID, designed to detect deficiencies in cognitive abilities in preschool children (sustained attention, memory, working memory, visuospatial abilities, and reaction time), before learning to read and write. Usability tests are used in Human-Computer Interaction to determine the feasibility of a system; it is the proof of concepts before the development of real systems. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the usability of the interface of the serious game, as well as the tangible user interface, a teddy bear with motion sensors. A usability study using the Wizard of Oz technique was conducted with 18 neurotypical preschool participants, ages 4 to 6. Concepts related to interactivity (interaction, the fulfillment of the activity objective, reaction to stimuli, and game time without distraction) were observed, as well as eye-tracking to assess attention and the Usability Scale System (SUS) to measure usability. According to the usability evaluation (confidence interval between 74.74% and 90.47%), the prototype has good to excellent usability, with no statistically significant differences between the age groups. The observed concept with the highest score was the game time without distraction. This characteristic will allow evaluating sustained attention. Also, we found out that the tangible interface use leads to the observation of laterality development, which will be added to the design of the serious game. The use of observation-based usability assessment techniques is useful for obtaining information from the participants when their communication skills are developing, and the expression of their perception in detail is limited.

Usability Evaluation of a Tangible User Interface and Serious Game for Identification of Cognitive Deficiencies in Preschool Children

Recommender systems are expected to promote a student-centered teaching and learning environment. The age of information abundance has proven to need such systems. Recommender systems have been used to recommend learning items related to students’ research interests. Serendipity has also made its way into the academic environment, as systems recommend items that are useful and surprising to learners. Understanding user workload is important for students who use serendipitous recommender systems. In this research, we investigate various user interfaces for academic recommender systems by looking at students who are attempting to obtain serendipitous recommendations for their academic tasks. The study was evaluated on the NASA task load index (NASA-TLX). Our priority was to understand the mental, physical, and other workload attributes that can change when students seek serendipitous recommendations. We studied Mendeley, Google Scholar, Academia.edu, and ResearchGate. Our study found no substantial serendipitous recommendations observed by the users, but a few traces of serendipitous experiences were observed. Further, no substantial workload was detected in using the systems. However, the recommender system did create different user experiences across repeated sessions. Further, a diverse range of task loads is associated with the recommenders used in academia, from mixed designs with rich user controls to very few controls. This research provided us with insights that can be used to help designers incorporate and accommodate new features and take calculated risks when designing serendipitous education technology.

NASA-TLX–based workload assessment for academic resource recommender system

: Accessibility awareness and development have improved in the past two decades, but many users still encounter accessibility barriers when using information technology (IT) artifacts (e.g., user interfaces and websites). Current research in information systems and human-computer interaction disciplines explores methods, techniques, and factors affecting the accessibility of IT artifacts for a particular population and provides solutions to address these barriers. However, design realized in one solution should be used to provide accessibility to the widest range of users, which requires an integration of solutions. To identify the factors that cause accessibility barriers and the solutions for users with different needs, a systematic literature review was conducted. This paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge by revealing (1) management- and development-level factors, and (2) user perspective factors affecting accessibility that address different accessibility barriers to different groups of population (based on the International Classification of Functioning by the World Health Organization). Based on these findings, we synthesize and illustrate the factors and solutions that need to be addressed when creating an accessible IT artifact.

Factors Affecting the Accessibility of IT Artifacts: A Systematic Review

Purpose - This study examines the effects of a simulation board game for teaching and learning shipping management in higher education. A framework of comprehensive shipping operations is developedaccording to the syllabus of the Shipping Management course at Universiti Utara Malaysia.The course core content in the game covers two main services—liner services and tramp services in the shipping industry.Methodology - A quasi-experimental research design was adopted to measure the effectiveness of the board game in giving students some understanding about shipping operations. Data were gathered from a sample of 73 undergraduate students enrolled in a Shipping Management course, using a non-equivalent control group design. The data were analysed using the McNemar Test to determine the level of understanding in shipping operations.Findings - It was found that using the board game in learning activities contributed to the improvement of students’ knowledge and skills. A performance comparison indicated that there were differences in students’ achievement for the tramp services and liner services contents.Significance - The framework for the shipping management board game aims to provide the best learning experience for students when they immerse themselves in solving problems and making decisions in the game. The framework can be used as a benchmark in the practice of game-based learning, particularly by affording students the opportunity to engage in learning by doing. Furthermore, this frameworkintroduces a tangible problem space through the board game, encouraging students to discover knowledge at their own pace in a non-threatening environment.

Shipping management simulation game for teaching and learning in higher education: A quasi-experimental study

The paper reports the exploratory search and development of the implementing technology for a type of multimedia prototype that solves the problem of children learning gap in digital multimedia learning, namely physical-digital multimedia system. The learning process for young children is different from adults. Their cognition and learning abilities are highly reliant on concrete stimuli. However, concrete stimuli that manifests the sense of physicality is never put forth in any circumstances of digital multimedia system, causing children to face various difficulties in learning. The scarce deployment of physical objects into multimedia may be ascribed to the immense challenges in terms of technicality in implementation. We therefore explore various devices to materialise the physical-digital multimedia. Our finding discovers that sensors are the technology that allows physical-digital multimedia implementable. At the end of this paper, a succinct discussion of potential research works in future is provided.
