En el presente trabajo se realizo la caracterizacion morfologica de 2 hibridos de papaya "Tainung-01" y "Scarlett Princess"introducidos en el banco de germoplasma del Instituto de Investigaciones en Fruticultura Tropical, La Habana, Cuba. Y fueron comparados con el cultivar cubano Maradol. Los resultados corroboraron que los hibridos presentan caracteristicas fenotipicas del Grupo Formosa, frutos de forma elongata en las plantas hermafroditas. El peso medio de los frutos es de 1,6 kg ("Tainung-01") y 1,7 kg ("Scarlett Princess"), de pulpa color naranja-rojiza y roja, respectivamente, asi como, con una productividad entre 98,5 y 63,8 kg.planta-1, caracteristicas que evidencian la posibilidad de utilizarlos en programas de mejoramiento genetico del cultivo y directamente por los productores.

Evaluación de dos híbridos de papaya introducidos en Cuba

: In Brazil, the improvement of papaya agribusiness is correlated to the estimation of genetic parameters and evaluation of agronomic descriptors; thus enabling less favourable areas for the development and implementation of papaya crops. Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate quantitative descriptors and to estimate genetic parameters in genotypes of papaya grown under subtropical climate in the state of São Paulo. The experimental design was randomized in block. The experimental units were grouped into seven blocks of five plants each and three treatments, which consisted of three different varieties: Sunrise Solo, Tainung nº1 and local. The psychochemical properties were analysed for plant height; intersection height of first fruits; stem diameter; male, female and hermaphroditic flower percentage; fruit number per plant; production; yield; normal fruits percentage, carpeloid and pentandric fruits; pulp matter; pulp length; pulp diameter; pulp shape; pulp cavity; pulp thickness; peel performance; pulp performance; seeds performance; seeds number; soluble solids; pH; titratable acidity; ratio; technological index; ascorbic acid and reducing sugars. Furthermore, most agronomic descriptors showed high heritability; besides that, the varieties Sunrise Solo and Tainung nº1 performed the best results in Botucatu.

Evaluation of papaya genotypes using agronomic descriptors and estimation of genetic parameters

The history of the papaya (Carica papaya, L.) in the Canary Islands came to show the viability of this crop under greenhouse and the possibility of further expansion in short term due to the introduction, over the last years, of high-quality of commercial cultivars from Hawaii ('Sunrise') and Brazil 'Baixinho de Santa Amalia'(BSA). In this work it was studied the growth, development and productivity of the cultivars Sunset, Sunrise and the genotype BH-65, and 'Baixinho de Santa Amalia', and the morphological and organoleptic characteristics of the fruits, in order to continue with the selection of those cultivars that best adapted and agree with the market requirements, maintain a good productivity in marginal areas for banana production and serve as a basis for future breeding programs. The results show that the highest flowering percentages took place in May (6 months after being planted) in hermaphrodite plants for all cultivars, corresponding to 'Sunset' and 'Sunrise' the maximum percentages (80 and 90.4%, respectively). The number of leaves emitted monthly is similar in all cultivars, between 7.5 and 7.8. The female plants of 'Sunrise'and the hermaphrodites of 'Sunset' have greater diameter, and in addition, the last cultivar is precocious in blooming and the fruits are bigger in size and weight. Note also that at the consumption point of the fruit, the cultivar Sunrise showed the highest total soluble solids content (10.33 ° Brix). Moreover, hermaphrodite fruits of 'Sunrise' are the first to be collected (422 days from planting). Finally, the cultivar Sunset has become the most productive (59.5 kg / pl) and has the highest yields per hectare (158.627 kg / ha). However, the genotypes BH-65 and BSA have a very similar behaviour, but are smaller in the first year of cultivation (142.9 y 138.8 cm) the first flower appears at a lower height (40.6 y 42.2 cm) and a there is lower length of internodes (1.4 y 1.3 cm). The descriptive characteristics of the fruits are very similar with no significant differences between them. The fruits have a good size (13.74 x 7.81 y 12.68 x 7.98cm) and weight (392.92 and 418.8 g.) and excellent production qualities of great interest for the cultivation of papaya under greenhouse.

Comportamiento de los cultivares de papaya Sunset, Sunrise y de los genotipos Baixinho de Santa Amalia y BH - 65 en la zona sur de la isla de Tenerife

Se colectaron en diferentes regiones de Cuba semillas de las accesiones de papayo Tallo Morado de Nava, Amarilla de Duaba, Amarilla de Nava y Sapote de Pilon. Estas se plantaron en condiciones de campo en Jaguey Grande, Matanzas - Cuba, donde se evaluo la presencia e intensidad de sintomas de mancha anular, siguiendo una escala graduada del 1 al 5. Los resultados mostraron un incremento temporal de la proporcion de plantas afectadas en todas las accesiones. La accesion Amarilla de Duaba mostro los sintomas a los dos meses despues de la primera evaluacion (MDPE), mientras que el resto lo hizo a los cinco MDPE, aunque con proporciones que variaron entre ellas. A los siete MDPE las accesiones Amarilla de Duaba y Amarilla de Nava mostraron proporciones identicas de plantas enfermas, mientras que Tallo morado de Nava y Sapote de Pilon mostraron proporciones inferiores. La intensidad de los sintomas se incremento en los diferentes organos siguiendo el siguiente orden: tallo (1,7 a 2,66), peciolos (2,21 a 3,03) y follaje (3,44-4,03). En los frutos la intensidad de los sintomas observados fue inferior a 2,5, considerados como leves de acuerdo a su intensidad y distribucion. Se ofrecen los primeros resultados sobre la susceptibilidad a la mancha anular de estas accesiones, siendo de gran utilidad para los productores, asi como para los programas de mejoramiento genetico en el pais.

Evaluación de accesiones cubanas de papaya (Carica papaya L.) ante la mancha anular

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a tropical fruit crop of rapid growth and early yielding. In recent years, papaya cultivation has extended to subtropical regions due to its commercial interest. In South East Spain, protected cultivation is, however, mandatory to ensure the optimal development of the crop. Even more, to assure profitability, the selection of plant material well adapted to the structural constrains and the climatic conditions inside greenhouses is essential. With this objective, different papaya cultivars with diverse geographical origin, characteristics and pedigree have been compared. ‘BH-65’, ‘Siluet’, ‘Sensation’, ‘Intenzza’ and ‘Red Lady’ papaya cultivars were thus grown under a plastic greenhouse in Almeria, SE Spain and their growth, phenology, yield and fruit quality compared in a 21-month production cycle. The results showed that ‘Siluet’ and ‘Sensation’ papayas are well-adapted to greenhouse protected cultivation, produce high yield, and optimal fruit quality for long and short distance markets. Cultivars like ‘BH-65’ could be of interest for low-height greenhouses due to its reduced plant vigor and high fruit quality. However, ‘BH-65’ yield is low. According to the European consumer preferences, the cultivation of ‘Siluet’ and ‘Sensation’ is recommended, for the harsh conditions the greenhouse cultivation imposes in subtropics.

Protected cultivation of ‘BH-65’, ‘Siluet’, ‘Sensation’,‘Intenzza’ and ‘Red Lady’ papaya cultivars in South East Spain

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the most important and widely spread fruit trees in tropical and subtropical countries. Due to the monovarietal explotation of ‘Maradol’ cultivar in Cuba, this crop is submitted to serious risks. Thus, the introduction, characterization and maintenance of new cultivars in the germplasm of this species constitute a key factor to identify and obtain new genotypes. This work presents the behaviour of three papaya cultivars introduced in the fruit germplasm bank from the Research Institute of Tropical Fruit Crops. Results indicate that cultivars ‘BH-65’ and ‘Baixinho de Santa Amalia’ showed significant plant height differences compared to ‘Sunset’. More than 100 leaves were emitted per year, which indicates a good genotypic adaptability to the contidions of this trial. Cultivars ‘BH-65’ and ‘Baixinho de Santa Amalia’ emitted the first flower at a lower plant height, a useful feature for productive purposes. In general, all papaya cultivars from Solo group had a favourable growth and vegetative development as well as an excellent productivity. It is a great advance to conduct further breeding programs to be used for commercial purposes. The mere introduction of new cultivars from ‘Solo group’ to the country could promote a crop production increment and therefore open future fruit market ways for exportation due to its trade success.
