A portable handheld device for wireless order entry and real time payment authorization may include a portable housing, a display carried by the housing, an order entry input device carried by the housing, a transaction card input device carried by the housing for reading user sensitive information from a transaction card, a wireless transceiver carried by the housing, and a processor carried by the housing and connected to the display, order entry input device, transaction card input device and wireless transceiver. The processor may be for wirelessly sending input order information, and encrypting and wirelessly sending the user sensitive information from the transaction card without storing and without displaying. The processor may also be for wirelessly receiving and displaying payment authorization information based upon real time authorization from a transaction card issuing entity.

No special software is required by clients.

Methods and apparatus are provided for intercepting a client-server communication connection in a computing environment. A first network intermediary configured to facilitate optimization of client-server transactions may be installed in a path of communications between the client and the server. A second network intermediary configured to cooperate with the first network intermediary is not in the path of communications between the client and the server. The first network intermediary intercepts a connection request from the client and forwards a modified request toward the server. A module within the server intercepts the connection request and redirects it to the second network intermediary. The client-server connection is thus split-terminated at the two network intermediaries, which establish cooperative sessions between themselves and with the client and with the server.

Techniques are provided for using an authentication proxy server for a destination server to authenticate the identity of the user of a client system based on a digital certificate and a user password. The authentication proxy server also cryptographically associates a digital signature with hardware of a particular client system and later authenticates the hardware of the client system based on the digital signature associated with the hardware. When these techniques are combined with authenticating the destination server based on a digital certificate and authentication the encryption of communications between a browser of the a client system and the a destination server, an authenticated identity for an application user may be provided to the application and the need for the application to request and authenticate a user identifier and password is eliminated.

Securing computer network communication using a proxy server

Transaction accelerators can be configured to terminate secure connections. A server-side accelerator intercepts a secure connection request from a client and directed to a server. The server-side accelerator responds to secure connection request in place of the server, thereby establishing a secure connection between the client and the server-side accelerator. Alternatively, the server-side accelerator monitors the establishment of a secure connection between the client and the server. After the secure connection has been established, the server-side accelerator forwards security information to a client-side accelerator, enabling the client-side accelerator to assume control of the secure connection. As a result of this arrangement, the client-side accelerator is able to encrypt and decrypt data on the secure connection and accelerate it in cooperation with the server-side accelerator. In a further embodiment, the accelerated traffic between accelerators is carried across the network via another secure connection.

A system and method for allowing users of wireless and mobile devices to participate in Public Key Infrastructure facilitates secure remote communications. The present invention allows wireless devices to participate in secure communications with secure networks without storing compromisable information on the wireless device. In one embodiment, the system allows wireless devices to participate in Public Key Infrastructure wherein no portion of the certificate, no information about the certificate, and no private or public key data are stored on the wireless device. In one embodiment, a certificate proxy server maintains the digital certificate and private for the client device in a secure fashion, and maintains connectivity with the wireless network. The mobile user can authenticate with the server in order to access resources that require the certificate to be presented.
