A combination ventilation apparatus and anesthesia delivery system comprises a circulation loop within which oxygen and air or other clinical gas, or a mixture of air, oxygen, nitrous oxide or other clinical gas and anesthetics, are circulated by a variable speed centrifugal blower to a Y-piece which connects the circulation loop to an endotracheal tube or other airway device communicating with a patient. A proportional flow control valve is operative to actively control the pressure or flow at the Y-piece in response to signals from pressure or flow sensors which are positioned to provide measurements representative of the actual pressure and flow conditions within the patient's lungs. Constant circuit volume is maintained by computer control of gas make-up valves in response to the movement of a weighted bellows located between the proportional flow control valve and centrifugal blower.

Ventilation apparatus and anesthesia delivery system

A respiration unit for supplying a preselected limited volume of breathing gas to a patient at limited positive pressures, and at a preselected limited flow rate is disclosed. The system includes an air delivery cylinder having a drive weight which is free to move up and down. A diaphragm connected to the weight divides the cylinder into an upper control chamber and a lower delivery chamber. A vacuum source is connected to the control chamber through a first solenoid-controlled valve to regulate the lifting of the weight, and a second solenoid-controlled valve regulates the bleeding of air into the control chamber to release and regulate the rate of fall of the weight, thereby driving breathing gas under pressure out of the lower chamber. A control system regulates the lift and lower cycles of the drive weight to provide the required operation of the system, with various sensors being provided to allow patient control of the system under selected conditions, and to assure patient safety. The control system incorporates, among other things, means for providing a variable inspiratory-expiratory ratio, for permitting patient assisted breathing, for mixing oxygen with air or anesthetic gases, for periodically altering the breathing pattern, for permitting selection of positive or negative end expiratory pressure, for allowing selection of the breathing waveform, and for providing accurate displays of essential parameters.

Volume-rate respirator system and method

An ophthalmic handpiece is disclosed. The handpiece includes coaxial irrigation and aspiration needles, with passageways through the body of the handpiece for connection to conventional equipment for supplying irrigation and aspiration. Within the aspiration needle, there is a reciprocating cutting device for cutting tissue, that extends into the aspiration needle. The cutting device is moved by a driving device that rotates as it moves, to rotate the cutting device during the cutting motion. The aspiration passageway is also provided with a supply for reflux irrigation to assist in removal of tissue from the aspiration port.

Disclosed herein is a patient ventilator apparatus having a pneumatic control system operable in three different modes wherein the apparatus assists the breathing of the patient, controls the patient''s breathing in a timed manner, or operates in a combination assist/control mode according to certain predetermined conditions. Fluidic circuitry controls a valved bellows apparatus, which in turn supplies air to a patient subject to limitations of time, volume, and pressure, wherein the gas supplied to the bellows comprises an adjustable oxygen/air mixture. Fluidic timers are provided for use in the control mode of the circuitry, and identical fluidic circuitry combinations are provided for use in the assist mode to automatically trigger the ventilator apparatus into an inspiratory state according to the patient''s breathing requirements and to trigger such apparatus into an exhalation state when a predetermined inspiratory pressure is attained.

Patient ventilator apparatus

A respirator with an inhalation phase and an exhalation phase in its operative cycle having an inlet adapted to be connected to a supply of gas under pressure and first and second outlets. A device is provided for establishing a positive pressure above atmospheric against which the patient must exhale during the exhalation phase for a predetermined period near the end of the exhalation phase. A device is provided for terminating the application of positive pressure so that the patient is exposed to ambient atmospheric pressure prior to initiation of the inhalation phase. Inspiratory flow acceleration means is provided for supplying additional gases to the first outlet during the inhalation phase. A control device is provided for establishing the length of the inhalation phase and includes an auxiliary reservoir for collecting gas and means for bleeding off the gas from the auxiliary reservoir whereby the exhalation time can be adjusted without being adversely affected by the pressure of the inlet gas. A volume limiting device is provided so that when desired a precise volume of gas can be delivered to the patient. A device is provided for supplying an anesthesia gas in the gases supplied to the inlet so that the respirator can be utilized as an anesthesia unit.

Respirator and method

A pneumatically operated pump is connected with a conduit for supplying a gas to a patient''s lungs. A first fluidic control element and a pneumatic timer control means for delivering air under pressure to the pump for operating it. The fluidic control element is controlled by a second fluidic control element, which in turn is controlled by a third fluidic control element. The latter is controlled by the movement of the pump during lung inflation to reverse the pump in order to allow exhalation. The second control element also controls an exhalation valve. Other elements provide for periodic longer inhalation periods, excess pressure release and sudden inhalation.
