Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to classify research on information and communication technology (ICT) for logistics and freight transportation on the basis of the main themes and methods and proposes directions for future researchDesign/methodology/approach – The review is based on 44 papers published from 1994 to 2009 in international peer‐reviewed journals The academic papers are analysed and classified according to the research methodology adopted and the themes addressedFindings – While there are many contributions taking the “public transportation” perspective (ie the viewpoint of public stakeholders), papers focussing on the “private transportation” perspective (ie the viewpoint of the private companies offering logistics and transportation services) are fewer and relatively more recent Additionally, even though in recent years researchers have also started to examine the decision‐making process of ICT adoption, many themes are under‐represented in literature, such as the subject of

ICT for logistics and freight transportation: a literature review and research agenda

– Companies in the freight transportation industry can currently make use of an increasing number of applications based on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve the performance of their processes. Although these applications have become more widely used in recent years, there is still little research focussing on the actual adoption rate. The present study aims to fill this gap and provide a broad empirical analysis of the use of ICT‐based applications in the freight transportation industry in Italy., – The analysis uses multiple‐case studies. It is based on semi‐structured interviews with the management of leading Italian companies involved in transportation processes., – The study provides an insight into the current adoption of ICT applications among companies involved in freight transportation activities in Italy. The results point out the most used functions in each application area and the level of integration across these application areas., – The sample of companies examined in this study was selected by expert assessment, and is biased towards companies willing to provide data and share results. However, the findings provide some interesting results on how and where investments in ICT can be suitable for companies in the logistics and transportation industry., – The paper fulfils an identified need for in‐depth case studies focussing on the adoption level and the implementation process of ICT applications in transportation, and it is of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of logistics and transportation management.

An exploratory study of ICT adoption in the Italian freight transportation industry

The rapidly improving price-performance of wireless technologies is providing an unprecedented platform for the development of wireless applications for businesses. This paper aims to explore the strategic value of enterprise mobility. In order to achieve this goal, it provides an overview of the literature related to mobile business applications in the work domain and highlights the findings of four studies developed in New Zealand. The paper concludes with a discussion about present challenges and the future of the mobile enterprise.

The strategic value of enterprise mobility: Case study insights

Field Force Automation (FFA) has been introduced as the summary term for the redesign of workflows and business processes in the field by means of fully mobile wirelessly connected technologies and applications In practice, governments around the world have increasingly begun to explore the potential of FFA by equipping field crews with mobile technologies and applications FFA in government promises substantial gains in crew productivity and information quality in on-site decision making However, as in the case of other far-reaching technology-enabled changes in the past, FFA requires numerous technical, organizational, and social adjustments to reach the targeted potential We have studied the case of a US city government that introduced FFA in its public utilities service units a while ago While FFA lives up to promise in some areas, it does not so in others Based on the analyses of the work context and the FFA uses, we have developed a set of recommendations for improving both the technical and organizational sides of the FFA approach While some recommendations might be case-specific, others appear to apply to e-Government FFA in general In this paper, we detail and discuss the choices that governments may face in FFA projects The contribution of this paper is that it helps guide other FFA projects The paper also adds to the academic understanding of the challenges and choices in e-Government FFA

Choices and challenges in e-government field force automation projects: insights from case studies

In the past, field operations have mostly been a stepchild of information and communication technology (ICT) enabled organizational overhaul and process re-design. Recently, increased technological (mobile wirelessly connected) capability, economic necessity, and new external factors (such as the higher frequency of large-scale emergencies, for example, of the magnitude of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the US) have raised interest in and commitment to on-site information management and to a drastically improved in-situ decision making capacity of field operations. Field force automation (FFA) techniques and process changes have been introduced in field operations of organizations in both the private and public sectors. This study seeks to establish a baseline of current FFA practices in both sectors. Among other areas, we explore, what the work-related and organizational specifics of field operations are, also with respect to ICTs, how process completion and efficiency are measured, and how effective FFA is with regard to information management. FFA, it appears is still in its infancy, and the full extent of potential efficiency and productivity gains might need more time to emerge.

Current Practices in Field Force Automation: Decision Support and Information Management for the Field Force

Purpose – Wireless and mobile technologies are changing the way that many organizations operate and do business. Mobile business‐to‐employee solutions, especially field force automation (FFA), have been widely adopted throughout the planet. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of wireless FFA in trade services organisations in New Zealand.Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses a case study approach to examine two trade services organisations.Findings – The findings demonstrate that wireless technologies can significantly enhance the benefits of traditional FFA.Practical implications – The paper concludes with recommendations for future practice and research.Originality/value – This paper contributes to the academic research in this field by examining two organizations that have already implemented their own wireless FFA solutions and have realized benefits and impacts as a result.
