Heating systems and methods for inductive heating or a combination of resistive and inductive heating. A heater coil is inductively coupled to an article and a current signal is supplied to the heater coil. The heater coil generates a magnetic flux, based on the applied current signal, for inductively heating the article. Current pulses of a certain profile are used to enhance the rate, intensity and/or power of inductive heating delivered by the heating element or coil and/or to enhance the lifetime or reduce the cost of the inductive heating system.

A system and method for inductive heating, in which a power source provides current pulses with high-frequency harmonics to a heater coil, the coil generating a magnetic flux for inductive heating of an article. The high-frequency harmonics enhance a relative proportion of inductive heating, compared to resistive heating of the heater coil. Providing these high-frequency harmonics, occurring above the border frequency of the heating system, enables the system to deliver an increased proportion of inductive heating, compared to resistive heating, without requiring an increase in the Root Means Square (RMS) current in the coil. Providing better coupling between the coil and the core, such as by embedding the coil wholly or at least partially in the core, and providing a magnetic yoke to close the loop with the core, can provide a significantly decreased border frequency. This reduction of the border frequency then can be utilized to provide larger amounts of energy in the high-frequency harmonics of the current pulses, and thus provide a greater percentage of inductive heating without increasing the current in the coil. The current pulses preferably have steeply varying portions, such as a steeply varying leading edge and/or trailing edge.

Apparatus and method for inductive heating

Method and apparatus for providing harmonic inductive power, and more particularly for delivering current pulses providing a desired amount of pulse energy in high frequency harmonics to a load circuit for inductive heating of an article. By controlling the shape and/or frequency of such current pulses, the apparatus and method can be used to enhance the rate, intensity and/or power of inductive heating delivered by the heater coil and/or to enhance the lifetime or reduce the cost and complexity of an inductive heating power supply. Of particular significance, the apparatus and method may be used to significantly increase the power inductively delivered to a ferromagnetic or other inductively heated load, without requiring an increase of current in the heater coil. This enables new heating applications, and in some known applications, decreases the energy consumption or cooling requirements and/or increase the lifetime of the heater coil.

Method and apparatus for providing harmonic inductive power

An induction heating apparatus and method for heating a substantially continuous first bondline defined by a length of thermally responsive bonding material positioned between a first member and a second member. The first member or second member is made of an electrically conductive material or positioned adjacent an electrically conductive material. The inductive heating apparatus includes a flexible, reshapeable cable assembly operably positionable adjacent the first member along the first bondline. The flexible, reshapeable cable assembly is capable of being manually shaped to a first shape of the first bondline, and is capable of being manually re-shaped to a second shape of a second bondline different than the first shape of the first bondline. An alternating current power supply is electrically coupled to the flexible, reshapeable cable assembly. When the alternating current power supply is activated the reshapeable cable assembly operates to inductively heat the electrically conductive material for conductive heating of the thermally responsive bonding material substantially uniformly along the first bondline.

Conformable loop induction heating apparatus and method for accelerated curing of bonded members

The side seam of a can is coated and heated inductively by passing it through a medium frequency, oscillating magnetic field generated by an induction coil wound around a core. The core is shaped and oriented so as to have two magnetically opposite poles direct magnetic flux in a concentrated manner from the coil into the side seams of cans traveling along a path of travel. The cores are constructed using individual laminations of high frequency core material, each less than about 0.006 inches thick, individually insulated from each other and bound together to form a U- or E-shaped core directing flux toward the workpiece. The induction coil is constructed using a form of Litz wire and the coil and core are air-cooled. In one embodiment, the core has a plurality of pole pieces each directed toward the path of travel. The induction coil is wound on the core such that sequential ones of the pole pieces along the path of travel have alternatingly magnetically opposite polarities. In one embodiment, the inductive heating apparatus is used as a pre-curing stage, downstream of a side seam inside coat applicator and upstream of a curing oven, but located in close enough proximity to the side seam inside coat applicator to heat the coating sufficiently to bind it in place so that it does not fall off the seam and onto the conveyor before it reaches the curing oven.
