Fiber-reinforced tools for downhole use
Grant O. Cook,Garrett T. Olsen,Daniel Brendan Voglewede,Jeffrey G. Thomas +3 more
- 11 Dec 2014
TL;DR: In this article, a wellbore tool may be formed, at least in part, by a fiber-reinforced hard composite portion that comprises reinforcing particles and reinforcing fibers dispersed in a binder, wherein the reinforcing fibers have an aspect ratio ranging from 1 to 15 times a critical aspect ratio (A c ), wherein A c =σ f /(2 T c ), σ f is an ultimate tensile strength of the reinforcement fibers, and T c is an interfacial shear bond strength between the reinforcing fiber and the binder.

Mesh reinforcement for metal-matrix composite tools
Daniel Brendan Voglewede,Grant O. Cook,Garrett T. Olsen +2 more
- 19 Mar 2015
TL;DR: A mold assembly system includes a mold assembly that defines an infiltration chamber used for forming an infiltrated metal-matrix composite (MMC) tool as discussed by the authors, where reinforcement materials are deposited within the infiltration chamber, and a binder material is used to infiltrate the reinforcement materials.

Precipitation hardened matrix drill bit
Daniel Brendan Voglewede,Garrett T. Olsen +1 more
- 11 Feb 2014
TL;DR: A drill bit may include a matrix bit body and a plurality of cutting elements coupled to an exterior portion of the matrix bits body, wherein the matrix body includes matrix particles and precipitated intermetallic particles dispersed in a binder as discussed by the authors.

Insulation enclosure with a radiant barrier
Clayton A. Ownby,Grant O. Cook,Jeffrey G. Thomas,Daniel Brendan Voglewede,William Brian Atkins,Ronald Eugene Joy,Michael Clark +6 more
- 25 Jun 2014
TL;DR: In this article, a support structure has at least an inner frame and providing a top end, a bottom end, and an opening defined in the bottom end for receiving a mold within an interior of the support structure, and a radiant barrier is positioned within the interior of support structure to redirect thermal energy radiated from the mold back towards the mold.

Metal-matrix composites reinforced with a refractory metal
Garrett T. Olsen,Grant O. Cook,Daniel Brendan Voglewede,Jeffrey G. Thomas +3 more
- 29 Feb 2016
TL;DR: A metal matrix composite tool that includes a hard composite portion comprising a reinforcement material infiltrated with a binder material, wherein the reinforcement material comprises a refractory metal component dispersed with reinforcing particles, and the reinforcing particles have a shear modulus of greater than 200 GPa and at least two times greater than the failure strain of the metal component as mentioned in this paper.
