The video game market has become an established and ever-growing global industry. The health of the video and computer games industry, together with the variety of genres and technologies available, means that video game concepts and programmes are being applied in numerous different disciplines. One of these is the field known as serious games. The main goal of this paper is to collect all the relevant articles published during the last decade and create a trend analysis about the use of certain artificial intelligence algorithms related to decision making and learning in the field of serious games. A categorization framework was designed and outlined to classify the 129 papers that met the inclusion criteria. The authors made use of this categorization framework for drawing some conclusions regarding the actual use of intelligent serious games. The authors consider that over recent years enough knowledge has been gathered to create new intelligent serious games to consider not only the final aim but also the technologies and techniques used to provide players with a nearly real experience. However, researchers may need to improve their testing methodology for developed serious games, so as to ensure they meet their final purposes.

Review of the Use of AI Techniques in Serious Games: Decision Making and Machine Learning

Game programmers rely on artificial intelligence techniques to encode characters' behaviors initially specified by game designers. Although significant efforts have been made to assist their collaboration, the formalization of behaviors remains a time-consuming process during the early stages of game development. We propose an authoring tool allowing game designers to formalize, visualize, modify, and validate game level solutions in the form of automatically generated storyboards. This system uses planning techniques to produce a level solution consistent with gameplay constraints. The main planning agent corresponds to the player character, and the system uses the game actions as planning operators and level objectives as goals to plan the level solutions. Generated solutions are presented as 2-D storyboards similar to comic strips. We present in this paper the first version of a fully implemented prototype as well as examples of generated storyboards, adapted from the original design documents of the blockbuster game Hitman.

Automatic Generation of Game Level Solutions as Storyboards

Narrative time has an important role to play in Interactive Storytelling (IS). The prevailing approach to controlling narrative time has been to use implicit models that allow only limited temporal reasoning about virtual agent behaviour. In contrast, this paper proposes the use of an explicit model of narrative time which provides a control mechanism that enhances narrative generation, orchestration of virtual agents and number of possibilities for the staging of agent actions. This approach can help address a number of problems experienced in IS systems both at the level of execution staging and at the level of narrative generation. Consequently it has a number of advantages: it is more flexible with respect to the staging of virtual agent actions; it reduces the possibility of timing problems in the coordination of virtual agents; and it enables more expressive representation of narrative worlds and narrative generative power. Overall it provides a uniform, consistent, principled and rigorous approach to the problem of time in agent-based storytelling. In the paper we demonstrate how this approach to controlling narrative time can be implemented within an IS system and illustrate this using our fully implemented IS system that features virtual agents inspired by Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The paper presents results of an experimental evaluation with the system that demonstrates the use of this approach to co-ordinate the actions of virtual agents and to increase narrative generative power.

Controlling narrative time in interactive storytelling

The prose storyboard language is a formal language for describing movies shot by shot, where each shot is described with a unique sentence. The language uses a simple syntax and limited vocabulary borrowed from working practices in traditional movie-making, and is intended to be readable both by machines and humans. The language is designed to serve as a high-level user interface for intelligent cinematography and editing systems.

The Prose Storyboard Language: A Tool for Annotating and Directing Movies

Interactive narrative systems attempt to tell stories to players capable of changing the direction and/or outcome of the story. Despite the growing importance of multiplayer social experiences in games, little research has focused on multiplayer interactive narrative experiences. We performed a preliminary study to determine how human directors design and execute multi-player interactive story experiences in online and real world environments. Based on our observations, we developed the Multiplayer Storytelling Engine that manages a story world at the individual and group levels. Our flexible story representation enables human authors to naturally model multiplayer narrative experiences. An intelligent execution algorithm detects when the author's story representation fails to account for player behaviors and automatically generates a branch to restore the story to the authors' original intent, thus balancing authorability against robust multiplayer execution.

Robust and authorable multiplayer storytelling experiences

Petri Nets can be used for a retrospective analysis of a computer game story, for representing plots in serious games as well as for monitoring the course of the story, as recently demonstrated by several authors. It was not clear, however, whether Petri Nets can be used for representing plots and for their unfolding in games that feature large worlds inhabited by virtual humans. This paper demonstrates that this is indeed possible, presenting several scenarios from the serious game Karo, an on-going project, which features both virtual humans driven by reactive planning and a story manager unfolding story plots represented and controlled by Petri Nets. However, a specific refinement of Petri Nets, a hierarchical model capitalising on Timed Coloured Petri Nets and non-deterministic FSMs, had to be developed for this purpose. This refinement is described here, including general discussion showing why individual features of this refinement are needed – directions for game developers considering whether to use this technique, or not.
