Applications of chitin- and chitosan-derivatives for the detoxification of water and wastewater--a short review.

Adsorption characterization of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions onto chitosan-tripolyphosphate beads: Kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies.

Comparative and competitive adsorption of copper, lead, and nickel using chitosan immobilized on bentonite

The study examined the adsorption of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution onto chitosan, chitosan-GLA and chitosan-alginate beads. Several important parameters influencing the adsorption of Pb(II) ions such as initial pH, adsorbent dosage and di erent initial concentration of Pb(II) ions were evaluated. The mechanism involved during the adsorption process was explored based on ion exchange study and using spectroscopic techniques. The adsorption capacities obtained based on non‐linear Langmuir isotherm for chitosan, chitosan-GLA and chitosan-alginate beads in single metal system were 34.98, 14.24 and 60.27 mg/g, respectively. However, the adsorption capacity of Pb(II) ions were reduced in the binary metal system due to the competitive adsorption between Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions. Based on the ion exchange study, the release of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , K + and Na + ions played an important role in the adsorption of Pb(II) ions by all three adsorbents but only at lower concentrations of Pb(II) ions. Infrared spectra showed that the binding between Pb(II) ions and the adsorbents involved mostly the nitrogen and oxygen atoms. All three adsorbents showed satisfactory adsorption capacities and can be considered as an e cient adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions.

Pb(II) biosorption using chitosan and chitosan derivatives beads: Equilibrium, ion exchange and mechanism studies

Magnetic activated carbon/tungsten nanocomposite (AC/Fe/W) was prepared as an environmentally friendly cost-effective adsorbent. Its chemical, morphological, thermal degradation and surface properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and surface area (BET) techniques. The developed adsorbent was used for the remediation of Al(III) ions from aqueous solution. The optimum experimental conditions were found under response surface methodology (RSM) using central composite design (CCD). The adsorption efficiency was achieved up to 90% within 45 min at pH 5 at 24 °C. To investigate the suitability of the process, the equilibrium data were evaluated by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption capacity of AC/Fe/W composite was found to be 184.12 mg g−1. The kinetic examinations showed that the pseudo-second order was the best fitting model to explain the adsorption mechanism. The activation energy of adsorption (Ea) was determined as 2.04 kJ mol−1, indicating that the adsorption process was carried out via physical sorption mechanism. Thermodynamic findings indicated the exothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption process and increased randomness at the solid-solution interface. By using 1.0 mol L−1 HCl solution, the adsorbed Al(III) ions were desorbed at high effectiveness and also the composite can be reused up to five cycles. Based on all of the results, it can be concluded that the fabricated composite material is effective and promising adsorbent for the cleaning treatment of Al(III) ions from wastewaters by large-scale designed adsorption system.

Magnetic activated carbon loaded with tungsten oxide nanoparticles for aluminum removal from waters

The formation of complexes between alum with morin and quercetin in aqueous solution with and without pH control have been studied by UV-visible spectroscopy. The stoichiometries of the complexes were evaluated using the molar ratio method. The association ratio of alum with morin and quercetin without pH control were 3 : 2 and 1 : 1, respectively. In the buffer system pH 4.5, the stoichiometry of alum with morin and quercetin were 1 : 1 and 1 : 1, respectively. The heats of formation of complex, obtained by semi-empirical PM3 method, indicated that the proposed complexes can be favorably formed.

UV-VIS spectroscopic study of natural dyes with alum as a mordant

Silk yarn was dyed with morin (2′,3,4′,5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) by using alum as mordant. In order to optimize the process, three methods of dyeing involving: pre-mordanting, simultaneous mordanting, and post-mordanting were assessed and compared with a mordant-free process. The adsorption of alum-morin dye onto silk fibers indicated that the adsorption capacities were significantly affected by pH, the initial dye concentration, and temperature. The initial dye adsorption rates of alum-morin dye on silk before equilibrium was reached increased with higher dyeing temperatures. The pseudo second-order kinetic model was indicated for alum-morin dyeing (simultaneous mordanting) of silk at pH 4.0 with an activation energy (Ea) of 45.26 kJ/mol. The value of the enthalpy of activation (ΔH#) for alum-morin dyeing on silk at pH 4.0 was −31.29 kJ/mol. Also, the free energy (ΔGo) and entropy changes (ΔSo) for alum-morin dyeing on silk were −17.73 kJ/mol and −45.7 J/molK, respectively, consistent with a spontaneous and exothermic adsorption process.

The Al(III) and Ga(III) complexes formed by morin (M) in aqueous solution were investigated by means of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In the full scan mass spectra, Al:M showed 1:2 and 2:3 stoichiometric ratios. When (S)-N-acetylserine methyl ester (Ser), as a partial mimic of the serine residue in silk, was added to Al:M and Ga:M complexes in aqueous solution, the mass spectra of Ser:Al:M showed 1:1:1 and 1:1:2 stoichiometric ratios. The patterns of the mass spectra of Ga:M and Ser:Ga:M complexes were similar to those for the corresponding Al(III) complexes. Calculated heats of formation of potential structures of the complexes, with and without bound water, were obtained using semiempirical PM3 calculations.
