Solid-state thermoelectric devices can directly convert electricity into cooling or enable heat pumping through the Peltier effect. The commercialization of thermoelectric cooling technology has been built on the Bi2Te3 alloys, which have had no rival for the past six decades around room temperature. With the discovery and development of more promising materials, it is possible to reshape thermoelectric cooling technology. Here we review the current status of, and future outlook for, thermoelectric cooling materials. Thermoelectric materials can generate electricity from waste heat but can also use electricity for cooling. This Perspective discusses coefficients of performance for these systems and the state-of-the-art for materials, and suggests strategies for the discovery of improved thermoelectric materials.

A system for use in freezing, storing and thawing biopharmaceutical materials includes a flexible sterile container means for holding biopharmaceutical material therein and a holder more rigid than said container means. The container means is received in a cavity of the holder and the holder extends along a perimeter of the container means. The holder is fixedly connected to the container means. The holder includes opposing sides defining an opening and the container means extends between the opposing sides of the holder defining the opening. The container means includes a substantially smooth exterior surface extending between the opposing sides.

Systems and methods for freezing, storing and thawing biopharmaceutical materials

The present invention provides a system for controlling the climate of a hybrid vehicle. The system includes a thermoelectric module, a heat exchanger, a pump, and a valve. The thermoelectric module includes thermoelectric elements powered by electric energy. The thermoelectric elements emit or absorb heat energy based on the polarity of the electrical energy provided. A tube containing coolant runs proximate the thermoelectric elements. To aid in the transfer of heat energy, a blower is provided to generate an air flow across the thermoelectric elements and the tube. The coolant is provided from the thermoelectric module to a heat exchanger that heats or cools the air flow provided to the cabin of the vehicle. The pump and valve are in fluid communication with the heat exchanger and thermoelectric module. The pump pressurizes the coolant flow through the tube and coolant lines. In a cooling mode, the valve is configured to selectively bypass the engine coolant system of the vehicle.

Climate control system for hybrid vehicles using thermoelectric devices

A personal environment appliance and a vent for a personal environment appliance are provided. The appliance includes at least one thermoelectric module over at least one inlet port. The appliance further includes at least one main outlet port spaced from the at least one inlet port and at least one waste outlet port spaced from the at least one inlet port. The appliance further includes at least one filter between the at least one inlet port and the at least one thermoelectric module. The vent includes a plurality of first tubular conduits generally parallel to one another and each first tubular conduit having a ratio of the length divided by the width, The vent further includes a plurality of second tubular conduits generally parallel to one another and having a ratio of the length divided by the width. The plurality of second tubular conduits generally surrounds the plurality of first tubular conduits. The ratios of the second tubular conduits are sufficiently large such that air flow from the second tubular conduits is substantially laminar.

A thermoelectric cooling system having an electric circuit including a direct current (“d.c.”) power source providing direct current through the electric circuit, a thermoelectric module having at least one heat sink and at least one heat source capable of being cooled to a predetermined temperature range, and a control assembly. The d.c. power source, the control assembly, and the thermoelectric module being connected to each other in series. The control assembly comprising a thermostat control switch mechanism and a resistive element connected to each other in parallel. The thermostat control switch having a sensor generally coupled to the heat source of the thermoelectric module, the thermostat control switch mechanism being open in the predetermined temperature range. The resistive element having a predetermined resistance sufficient for a level of voltage to be provided to the thermoelectric module, when the thermostat control switch mechanism is open, sufficient to substantially prevent reversal of the heat source and the heat sink. The thermoelectric cooling system being used in a process comprising placing an article of interest on the heat source, setting the thermostat to a desired predetermined temperature range, actuating the d.c. power source, and cooling the article of interest through conduction. Alternatively, the article may be placed below the heat source and cooled by convection.

Thermoelectric cooling system

A module for controlling the temperature within an enclosed structure is provided. The module comprises a thermoelectric assembly, a platform, and a panel. The thermoelectric assembly comprises a thermoelectric device with a first heat sink disposed on one side of the device and a second heat sink disposed on the other side of the device. The thermoelectric assembly further comprises an electric motor attached to one of the heat sinks with a rotating shaft extending longitudinally through the electrical motor and both heat sinks. A propeller may be attached to each end of the rotating shaft adjacent to the first heat sink and the second heat sink respectively. The platform may be removably engaged with the enclosed structure. A first fastener may be used to attach the thermoelectric assembly to the platform. A first opening may be provided in the platform adjacent to one of the propellers. The panel preferably attaches to the platform for use in mounting and sealing the thermoelectric module within the enclosed structure.

Compact thermoelectric refrigerator and module

A transport apparatus, for hauling data storage media requiring environmental protection to and from a permanent storage site, includes a portable transport module and a transport cart. The transport module includes an insulated housing having guides for receiving shelves adapted to hold motion picture films, audio and video tapes, and photography film and provide ready access to and protection against movement during transit. A thermoelectric heat pump assembly heats or cools the interior of the insulated housing. A temperature sensor and a humidity sensor in the housing produce temperature and humidity measurement signals. Connectors are provided to connect power to the thermoelectric heat pump assembly and to output the temperature and humidity measuring signals. An ancillary power supply and control system are included to operate the transport module when separated from the transport cart. The transport cart has a platform with tie down cleats, wheels attached to the platform, wheel locks for securing the transport cart against rolling, a rechargeable battery power pack and compartment, connectors corresponding to the connectors of the transport module connect the rechargeable battery power pack to the thermoelectric heat pump assembly and receive the temperature and humidity measuring signals. An upright member of the platform supports a handle for pushing the transport cart and a programmable controller having a processor, time and date clock, memory, display, keypad, and timers. The programmable controller receiving the temperature and humidity measurement signals and controls the operation of the thermoelectric heat pump assembly for maintaining programmed temperatures during programmed time periods.
