We have designed and implemented a scripting environment called "Kumoi" for managing collective VMs in a large-scale data center. Kumoi is unlike other scripting environments because it exploits strong typing with type inference and high-level description. Kumoi introduces several advancements, including treating virtual machines as first-class objects and decoupling the scripting model and its execution for hiding as many details as possible. We implemented Kumoi as an embedded domain-specific language based on Scala along with distributed agents running on each physical machine. Evaluation using example scripts showed that an administrator can more concisely write the instructions for performing complex VM lifecycle management tasks. Use of this environment should improve management efficiency and agility.

Kumoi: A High-Level Scripting Environment for Collective Virtual Machines

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networking uses a proliferate and powerful paradigm that replaces the traditional client/server communication model with an arbitrary communication model where all hosts or peers are both clients and servers. While P2P is well known for file sharing we developed a P2P system that provides distributed computing. We have developed and currently use a distributed shell over P2P which is a modified version of GNU-Bash that offers the user more computational power by transparently distributing commands over the P2P network. This paper presents the shell over P2P architecture and provides techniques we use to obtain I/O redirection and pipes, parametric computations, cross-file system and heterogeneous computing.

Distributed Shell over Peer-to-Peer Networks.

A single system image is provided for a parallel data warehouse system by exposing a shell database within a database management system comprising metadata and statistics regarding externally stored data. Further, functionality of the database management system can be exploited to perform pre-execution tasks. In one instance, one or more execution plans can be generated by the database management system for an input command and subsequently employed to generate a distributed execution plan.

Recent proliferation of embedded systems has generated a bold new paradigm, known as open embedded systems. While traditional embedded systems provide only closed base applications (natively-installed software) to users, open embedded systems allow the users to freely execute open applications (additionally-installed software) in order to meet various user requirements, such as user personalization and device coordination. Key to the success of platforms required for open embedded systems is the achievement of both the scalable extension of base applications and the secure execution of open applications. Most existing platforms, however, have focused on either scalable or secure execution, limiting their applicability. This dissertation presents a new secure platform using multi-core processors, which achieves both scalability and security. Four techniques feature the new platform: (1) seamless communication, by which legacy applications designed for a single processor make it possible to be executed on multiple processors without any software modifications; (2) secure processor partitioning with hardware support, by which Operating Systems (OSs) required for base and open applications are securely executed on separate processors; (3) asymmetric virtualization, by which many OSs over the number of processors are securely executed under secure processor partitioning; and (4) secure dynamic partitioning, by which the number of processors allocated to individual OSs makes it possible to be dynamically changed under secure processor partitioning.

A multi-core processor platform for open embedded systems

With dramatic improvements in cost-performance, the use of clusters of personal computers is becoming widespread. For ease of use and management, a single system image (SSI) is highly desirable. There are several approaches that one can take to achieve SSI. In this paper, we discuss the achievement of SSI via the use of the user login shell. To this end, we describe shoc (shell over a cluster)-an implementation of the standard Linux-GNU bash shell that permits the user to utilize a cluster as a single resource. In addition, shoc provides for transparent pre-emptive load balancing without requiring the user to rewrite, recompile or even relink of existing applications. Running at user-level, shoc does not require any kernel modification and currently runs on any Linux cluster fulfilling a minimal set of requirements. We also present results on the performance of shoc and show that the load balancing feature gives rise to better overall cluster utilization as well as improvement in response time for individual processes.
