Methods are disclosed for binding together human or animal tissue (20) using one-way sutures (10) having barbs (16) on their exterior surfaces, and allowing passage of a needle drawn suture in one direction through tissue but no in the opposite direction. In closing a wound (22), the sutures are passed through tissue at each of the opposed sides of the wound, and forming suture pairs in which trailing ends of the sutures are juxtaposed in the wound. The number of suture pairs is selected in accordance with the size of the wound. The wound is closed, and ends of the sutures of each suture pair are secured together which may be by heat bonding or surgical knots. In a variation of this procedure, double armed sutures are used. In another variation detachable needles are used to leave the barbed sutures below the skin. The invention avoids loop stitching, and minimizes scarring.

Surgical methods using one-way suture

A barbed suture including a body with barbs on the periphery, a pointed end, and an anchor at one end to resist movement of the suture in the direction of the pointed end is provided. One or more limbs on the anchor may be provided, which may be arcuate, of varying lengths, and varying distribution about the periphery of the suture body. Other anchor designs are provided. Methods of placing single-directional and bi-directional barbed sutures to approximate the tissue on each side of a wound and to position and support tissue in the absence of a wound, as in cosmetic surgery, are provided, and may include terminal J-stitches or S-stitches. Methods of placement may be made with sharp, pointed ends, which may be needles, or insertion devices. Sinusoidal patterns of sutures that have amplitudes generally perpendicular to the resultant holding force of the suture are provided.

Broadly speaking the present invention is directed to a system for calculating a volume of fluid that is disposed within a container. The system includes (1) an imaging device that captures and stores an image of at least the volume of fluid in the container; (2) a background disposed behind the container so that at least the volume of fluid in the container is disposed in front of the background; and (3) a processor that performs at least one operation on the stored image to calculate the volume of the fluid within the container.

A process and apparatus for printing indicia by indentation on vial or bottle seal closures made of soft stock, such as aluminum. The marking is impressed on the closure while it is capped over a glass vial or bottle held in position with resilient chucks which turn the bottle, and thereafter while the bottles are still being turned the closure is crimped under the flange or shoulder of the bottle by rotating against a crimping or curling bar. The indicia may be letters or numbers.

A filling machine for sterile filling of containers such as vials is described in which a moving conveyor brings predetermined amounts of single file, empty, sterile containers under filling nozzles and holds them there until they are filled. The filling machine has a number of nozzles equal to the number of containers, each nozzle having a pumping mechanism in the form of a double-compartment chamber, the two compartments being separated by flexible diaphragms. Pumping means are provided for pumping a predetermined amount of liquid into the second chamber, the amount corresponding to the volume which is to be filled into each container through the nozzle. The diaphragm flexes and in one stroke sucks into the first compartment an amount of liquid from a source which, of course, is the same volume that is pumped out of the second compartment. Then when the pump reverses, this amount is forced into each vial through the filling nozzle. The diaphragm keeps the two liquids separated and maintains sterile conditions. Preferably pumping is effected by a rotating plate connected through a rod and bushing to a plate which moves up and down to effect pumping. The connection is via a rigid rod with a ball and socket joint at each end. The stroke and hence the volume of liquid pumped is varied by lateral displacement of the axis of the horizontal driving plate. Of course check valves are provided in all of the lines so that there can be no back-flow of the liquid being pumped into the containers.
