A peripheral data acquisition, monitor, and adaptive control system is disclosed in which a personal computer (PC) and one or more input/output (I/O) Bridge devices interface signals from electronically-controlled devices to the PC via the keyboard port, thus permitting data, such as measurement data, to be automatically and directly entered into application programs such that the PC can take action and control outputs based upon the measurement data. A software control program is also disclosed which allows the user to configure the system for orienting the user as to which devices are being controlled, reading digital and analog inputs, making decisions based upon the information using specific user-defined conditions, and setting digital outputs. The system is also adapted to interface with a wireless or AC power-line transmission media.

A user can access a common database from a remote communications port, at any qualified location, to generate a map or other positional information which locates selected items of interest, e.g., businesses, stores, architectural sites, and the like. The database contains information representing the items of interest, including, for each of the items of interest, positional coordinates, a geographic vicinity, and a selected category. The positional coordinates discretely locate the vicinity, while the vicinity specifies the exact locations of the items of interest in the selected category. For example, a user in New York can select the display of sporting shops in the area surrounding Chicago O'Hara International Airport selectively. A user can also access a port and display locations of items of interest within the same vicinity as the user and relative to the user's position. The database can be modified from qualified remote locations to change, or add to, the information therein. An advertisement can be tagged to the display or print out as an association with the selected items of interest.

System and methods for remotely accessing a selected group of items of interest from a database

A menu driven reprogrammable drug pump is provided with a memory, such as flash memory, a display, a keyboard, and a communications port to allow a generic pump to be programmed with a desired pump application (therapy) program and patient specific settings. Programming and data transfer with another pump or a computer to and from the patient pump is by the communications port that allows local and/or remote communications with the pump. Flash memory stores the pump application program during use. Patient safety is provided by a cassette identification system, an occlusion detection system, and a latch/lock detection system. Automated testing of the pump is by a closed loop testing system.

Drug pump systems and methods

A number of improvements relating to methods and apparatuses for kidney dialysis are disclosed. These include checking of dialysate bypass status using flow measurement; using a flow sensor to confirm the absence of ultrafiltration during bypass; automatic testing of ultrafiltration function by removal of a discrete volume from a portion of the dialysate flow path coupled with a pressure test of that part of the flow path; using a touch screen user interface; bar graph profile programming of ultrafiltration, sodium, and bicarbonate parameters; using a RAM card to upload treatment instructions to, and to download treatment data from, the machine; automatic setting of proportioning mode (acetate or bicarbonate) based on connections of concentrate lines; predicting dialysate conductivity values based on brand and formulation of concentrates; minimizing no-flow dead time between dialysate pulses; initiating operation in a timed mode from a machine power-off condition; preserving machine mode during machine power-fail condition; calibration scheduling and reminding; automatic level adjusting; and blood leak flow rate detecting.

Method and apparatus for kidney dialysis

An analyzer/programmer system (30) for use with an implantable medical device, such as a cardiac pacemaker (20). The system facilitates noninvasive communications with the implantable device and makes analysis of the operation of the inplantable device easier to understand and perform. The system includes conventional processor means (42) for processing a sequence of stored instructions stored in programmable read-only memory, or ROM (40). The ROM, although designed to be accessed through predefined pages of information, and blocks within such pages, is configured to allow in-page addressing within any of a plurality of pages in a linear fashion. Programmed intervals to be sent to the implantable device are displayed by the system in tabular form or as scaled time lines or bars (Fig. 9A), with each separate interval beginning and ending in proper timed sequence, thereby providing a prediction of the expected performance. Such programmed intervals can overlay or sidelay measured performance (Fig. 9B), thereby facilitating a comparison between predicted and measured performance. The system also includes telemetry head means (28) for sending and receiving control and data signals to and from the implanted medical device (20). The telemetry head means (28) includes processing circuitry (Fig. 4C) that greatly simplifies the other circuitry needed in order to effectuate such communication.

Interactive programming and diagnostic system for use with implantable pacemaker

An industrial process control system in accordance with the present invention includes a plurality of device controllers connected together through a common buss with each device controller connected to an associated controlled device(s) that effect process control. A computer-aided system interface for controlling the overall system includes a visual display device in the form of a multi-color CRT and a graphic input device in the form of a transparent touch-responsive panel that overlies the CRT display screen. Computer generated symbols representing the controlled devices are displayed on the CRT screen to define touch-responsive target areas. When an appropriate target area is touched by a human operator, a signal, such as a command signal, is generated to cause the controlled device whose symbol is displayed in the designated target area to respond, with this response being then indicated by a change in the device symbol being displayed on the screen. Other features include generation of a "hit" display to indicate the last coordinates on the display screen touched by the operator, a two-step execute command sequence for entering high priority commands into the system, and the changing of analog set point values as a function of the time that a selected target area is touched. The system advantageously eliminates some, if not all, input through a conventional keyboard so that the system operator interfaces with the system through easily comprehended and non-ambiguous visual symbols.
