Since the publication (2004) of the last checklist of Hungarian bryoflora 27 previously unknown bryophytes (2 liverworts and 25 mosses) were recognised or discovered in the country. The recent checklist consists of 659 taxa (2 hornworts, 146 liverworts, 511 mosses). The work on the expanded list has given an opportunity to revise the conservation status of our bryoflora, resulting in an updated red list. According to the new red list presented here, 26.2% of the Hungarian bryoflora are threatened, marked by categories CR (3%), EN (13.7%), VU (9.5%), and 17.3% are near threatened (NT). In all of these categories, except CR, the percentage of liverworts (including hornworts) is higher than that of mosses. The ratio of data-deficient taxa is also high (21.1%) and a higher percentage of liverwort taxa falls in these categories, than of mosses. This reflects an unsatisfactory situation, that is, our shortcomings in field bryology. In addition, only 34.9% of the bryoflora can be regarded as non-threatened, but 20.6% of the full list requires proper attention in the future. It is also worrisome that only 15.5% of the liverworts is non-threatened; this percentage is higher in mosses (40.5%). Our list below also notes the indicator species, which by their mere presence denote the greater level of conservation value of the habitat, where they occur.

Updated checklist and red list of hungarian bryophytes

Tables listing all the bryophyte species recorded in Europe, along with their distribution and Red List status by country/territory, are presented. Status notes give short explanations, justifications, references, etc. for country occurrences in the distribution tables. Taxon details list the naming authorities for each taxon and provide notes and references on nomenclature and synonymy. Nomenclature follows the recently published annotated checklist of bryophytes of Europe, Macaronesia and Cyprus. An extensive
bibliography and literature list are provided, followed by an appendix with useful references for Europe as a whole, European regions and individual European countries or territories. Appendices with lists of European bryological societies, journals, floras and the country contacts of the European Committee for Conservation of Bryophytes are presented at the end of the report.

Andreaea rothii has been recorded for the first time in Croatia. It is a boreo-temperate suboceanic species (Hill et al., 2007) relatively rare in SE Europe, since it is known only from Romania (Ellis et al., 2014d), Slovenia and Serbia (Sabovljevic´ et al., 2008 ; Hodgetts, 2015). The species was found in the Papuk Mountains, situated in the mainly lowland area of NE Croatia. In this region Papuk is the largest and highest mountain range, with peaks between 800 and 900 m a.s.l. They are characterized by high geological diversity dominated by metamorphic rocks, such as different types of schists, as well as granites. The climate is temperate, moderately warm without an explicit dry period. About 60% of the almost totally forested area is covered by different communities of beech forests. The well-developed black patches of A. rothii cover an area ca 2 m× 0.5 m on a steep north-facing cliff on the edge of an acidothermophilic sessile oak (Quercus petraea agg.) forest. The specimens of A. rothii grew on the bare rock with the following bryophyte species: Cynodontium polycarpon (Hedw.) Schimp., Dicranella heteromalla (Hedw.) Schimp., Dicranum scoparium Hedw., Polytrichum piliferum Schreb. ex Hedw. and Rhabdoweisia (cf.) fugax (Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp. The population is very small with an extremely high risk of extinction, therefore we propose CR as Red List status for the taxon in Croatia. According to the last checklist of the moss flora of Croatia (Sabovljevic´, 2006), only Andreaea rupestris Hedw., collected from just one locality in 1927 (Horvat, 1932 and ZA), was reported for the genus. The locality is very interesting from the point of view of the vegetation of Croatia, because it is within 100 m of the second stand of Fagus sylvatica L.-Sphagnum quinquefarium (Braithw.) Warnst. forest (Alegro et al., 2015). The second occurrence of Dicranum spurium Hedw. (Ellis et al., 2014d) and Rhabdoweisia fugax (Papp et al., 2013) in Croatia are also found here. Another interesting moss is S. capillifolium (Ehrh.) Hedw., that forms small red patches within the thick carpets of S. quinquefarium under the open oulder scree forest in the neighbourhood.

Until now 99 sites could be selected as important bryophyte areas on the basis of 125 populations of 26 European red-listed species and an additional three species protected by law in Hungary. Most of the species with confirmed recent occurrences have few existing populations. The most important habitats from the point of view of the conservation of European red-listed bryophytes are places with shaded rocks or rocks in streams in forest-covered mountainous areas, which maintain 30% of the existing Hungarian populations of European red-listed species. Saline-alkali and dry rocky grasslands and loess cliffs are also very important habitats in the preservation of submediterranean, continental, and subcontinental elements. Wet grasslands nowadays are of minor importance in the preservation of rarities as they are in very bad conditions mainly due to dry climatic periods of the last decades. Similarly, the number of populations of species living on decaying wood and tree bark is not high either.
