The article concentrates on the research of the pressure peaks in a working chamber of an axial piston pump. The main focus of the article is the influence of fluid properties on the pressure peaks value. Experimental and analytical methods were used to determine the impact of the fluid density, viscosity, compressibility and aeration. The article describes the pressure peak generation process and explains the theoretical basis of this phenomenon. A model of aerated fluid compression and models of leakage were created using CFD analysis and mathematical equations. These partial models were then merged into one consistent model in Matlab Simulink. The final result was verified by comparing the results obtained from the mathematical model with the results of the experiment. After validation, the model was used to present explicitly how each of the mentioned fluid properties affects the pressure peak value. Additionally, the test stand and measurement equipment used in the experiment were presented along with a short description of the laboratory research and sample results.

Influence of Properties of Hydraulic Fluid on Pressure Peaks in Axial Piston Pumps’ Chambers

The article describes the flow rates of mineral oil and water flowing, as working media, through the commutation unit of a hydraulic satellite motor. It is demonstrated that geometrical dimensions of commutation unit clearances change as a function of the machine shaft rotation angle. Methods for measuring the rate of this flow and the pressure in the working chamber are presented. The results of pressure measurements in the working chamber during the transition from the filling cycle to the emptying cycle are included. The pressure in the motor’s working chamber changes linearly as a function of the shaft rotation angle, which has a significant effect on the leakage in the commutation unit clearances. The paper presents new mathematical formulas in the form: Q=f(Δpγ ) to calculate the flow rate of water and mineral oil in the commutation unit clearances. The γ factor is described as a function of fluid viscosity and clearance length (the motor shaft rotation angle). The coefficients used in these formulas were determined based on the results of laboratory tests of a motor supplied with water and mineral oil.

In this article developed mathematical model that includes friction occurrence on spline connections is presented. The work also contains results of experimental research on torque capacity of multidisc wet clutch. These results are expressed as a function of contact pressure for different number of friction surfaces. Due to increased interest in research concerning multidisc wet clutches it is essential to determine impact of friction on fit connections on transmitted torque. Analytical calculations that include both known loss coefficient and assumed lack of friction on fit connections are compared to results of experiments. The paper contains detailed description of test stand and methodology of experiment. As a result of conducted tests it was found that correction coefficients known from literature are highly inaccurate. Measured values of torque indicate that transmitted torque reach significantly higher values. It was also revealed that after slippage appeared, the pressure plate usually moved in the direction of exerted clamping force, but movement in reversed direction also took place for some experiments. While movement corresponding to clamping force reached ca. 0.08 mm, in opposite direction amounted to 0.02 mm. Furthermore, studies presented that lapping of adjacent friction surfaces greatly affects differences between respective results obtained for a specific experiment.

Torque capacity of multidisc wet clutch with reference to friction occurrence on its spline connections

It is widely accepted that vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is a major concern in the design of deep sea top-tensioned risers, especially when the riser is subjected to axial parametric excitations. An improved time domain prediction model was proposed in this paper. The prediction model was based on classical van der Pol wake oscillator models, and the impacts of the riser in-line vibration and vessel heave motion were considered. The finite element, Newmark-β and Newton‒Raphson methods were adopted to solve the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. The entire numerical solution process was realised by a self-developed program based on MATLAB. Comparisons between the numerical calculation and the published experimental test were conducted in this paper. The in-line and cross-flow VIV responses of a real size top-tensioned riser in linear sheared flow were analysed. The effects of the vessel heave amplitude and frequency on the riser VIV were also studied. The results show that the vibration displacements of the riser are larger than the case without vessel heave motion. The vibration modes and frequencies of the riser are also changed due to the vessel heave motion.

Prediction of Vortex-Induced Vibration Response of Deep Sea Top-Tensioned Riser in Sheared Flow Considering Parametric Excitations

A novel type of an axial, piston-driven high pressure hydraulic pump with variable capacity marks a significant improvement in the area of the hydraulic machinery design. Total discharge from hydrostatic forces eliminates a need for a servomechanism, thus simplifying operation, reducing weight and introducing the possibility of the pump displacement control by computer. PWK-type pumps, invented in the Gdansk University of Technology, offer high efficiency for pressure levels up to 55 MPa, ability to work self sucking even at high speed. However, the heart of the new invention, the commutation unit, creates harmful pressure peaks. Those peaks can be mitigated by the introduction of a compensation chamber with elastic walls. Owing to the dynamic character of events taking place in the pump, a need for computer simulation arouse in order to understand phenomena leading to the occurrence of pressure peaks and choose compensation chamber parameters accordingly. A CFD package alone would not be sufficient to reliably represent the interaction between the compensation chamber wall and the working fluid. This paper presents Fluid Structure Interaction approach comparing 3 different models: 2 simplified models of the pump and a full pump model.
