Selection of a C5a receptor antagonist from phage libraries attenuating the inflammatory response in immune complex disease and ischemia/reperfusion injury.
T. Heller,Meike Hennecke,Ulrich Baumann,J E Gessner,A M zu Vilsendorf,Melanie Baensch,François Boulay,Axel Kola,Andreas Klos,Wilfried Bautsch,Jörg Köhl +10 more
TL;DR: Evidence is given that C5a is an important mediator triggering the inflammatory sequelae seen in immune complex diseases and ischemia/reperfusion injury and may prove useful to attenuate the inflammatory response in these disorders.

Predicting antimicrobial resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa with machine learning-enabled molecular diagnostics.
Ariane Khaledi,Aaron Weimann,Monika Schniederjans,Ehsaneddin Asgari,Tzu-Hao Kuo,Antonio Oliver,Gabriel Cabot,Axel Kola,Petra Gastmeier,Michael Hogardt,Daniel Jonas,Mohammad R. K. Mofrad,Mohammad R. K. Mofrad,Andreas Bremges,Alice C. McHardy,Susanne Häussler +15 more
TL;DR: This study sequenced the genomes and transcriptomes of 414 drug‐resistant clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates and identified biomarkers of resistance to four commonly administered antimicrobial drugs, paving the way for the development of a molecular resistance profiling tool that reliably predicts antimicrobial susceptibility based on genomic and transcriptomic markers.

An outbreak of carbapenem-resistant OXA-48 - producing Klebsiella pneumonia associated to duodenoscopy.
Axel Kola,Brar Piening,Ulrich-Frank Pape,Wilfried Veltzke-Schlieker,Martin Kaase,Christine Geffers,Bertram Wiedenmann,Petra Gastmeier +7 more
TL;DR: Though the outbreak strain was also disseminated to patients who did not undergo ERCP and environmental sources or medical personnel also contributed to the outbreak, the gut of colonized patients is the main source for CPE, therefore, accurate and stringent reprocessing of endoscopic instruments is extremely important, especially true for more complex instruments involved in the outbreak described here.
Efficacy of heat and moisture exchangers in preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia: meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
TL;DR: A significant reduction in the incidence of VAP is found in patients humidified with HMEs during MV, particularly in patients ventilated for 7 days or longer, although this finding is limited by the exclusion of patients at high risk for airway occlusion from some studies.
The mother as most important risk factor for colonization of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E)
Luisa A. Denkel,Frank J. Schwab,Axel Kola,Rasmus Leistner,Lars Garten,K. Weizsäcker,Christine Geffers,Petra Gastmeier,Brar Piening +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that maternal-neonatal transmission of ESBL-E from mother to child is an important risk factor for colonization of VLBW infants and routine ESbl-E screening of neonates and mothers should be considered as a means of reducing neonatal morbidity and mortality.
