A number of companies have employed Global Software Development (GSD) methodology as a useful tool for their software development practices. GSD is a contractual relationship between client and vendor organizations in which a client outsources all or some part of its software development activities to a vendor. The vendor in return provides the agreed services in lieu of certain amount of remuneration. The main reasons to select the GSD technique include reduced cost, faster development and access to skilled manpower. Though GSD is emerging as an effective technique, but it suffers from many challenges like poor communication, lack of trust and coordination. These challenges pose serious risk to the smooth execution of the GSD projects. In this paper, we present a comparative study on GSD to highlight its merits and demerits. Our findings reveal that much of the research in this area has been focused on addressing issues faced by client organizations, however, vendor side in the GSD relationship is much ignored due to which this area is still immature; and, hence, further research work is required to be undertaken to address the issues faced by the vendor organizations.

Issues in Global Software Development: A Critical Review

Global Software Development (GSD) environment is based on a contractual relationship between client and vendor organizations in which a client outsources all or some part of its software development activities to a vendor. The vendor in return provides the agreed services in lieu of certain amount of remuneration. The main reasons to select the GSD technique include reduced cost, faster development and access to skilled manpower available across the world. Though GSD is emerging as an effective technique, but it suffers from many challenges like poor communication, lack of trust and coordination. These challenges pose serious risk to the smooth execution of the GSD projects. In the past decade, GSD has become an area of active research and a number of the researchers have worked on different aspects of it. In this paper, we present a critical review of the research studies conducted on GSD to highlight the challenges, best practices and benefits of GSD. Our findings reveal that much of the research in this area has been focused on addressing issues faced by client organizations, however, vendor side in the GSD relationship is much ignored due to which this field of study is still immature; hence, further research work is required to be undertaken to address the issues faced by the vendor organizations.

The Context of Global Software Development: Challenges, Best Practices and Benefits

With globalization, many software corporations have engineering groups working in different time zones. While a globally distributed team with engineers in different time-zones has been leveraged successfully in maintenance for reducing response time, not much work has been done on reducing the time in a development project, and globally distributed teams are mostly used to provide capacity benefit. We propose the use of global-pairs as a simple method of organizing global resources for leveraging time zone differences for reducing the cycle time. Instead of assigning tasks to individual resources, a project can assign tasks to global-pairs, each having one resource working in one time zone and the other in opposite time zone. Each global-pair is self-organizing and divides the work in a manner such that work within a task progresses continuously, thereby reducing the time to complete the assigned task by up to a half. Use of global pairs does not unduly complicate project management -- a key difficulty in global software development -- as a project looks same as before, except that some of the resources now "work faster". Initial experiment with a global pair in the coding phase of a live project suggests that the concept is feasible and can reduce the cycle time significantly.
