Direct detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum by polymerase chain reaction and DNA hybridization
F S Nolte,B Metchock,J E McGowan,Andrew M. Edwards,O Okwumabua,C Thurmond,P S Mitchell,B Plikaytis,T Shinnick +8 more
TL;DR: A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the rapid diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was developed by using oligonucleotide primers to amplify a fragment of IS6110, an insertion sequence repeated multiple times in the chromosome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Thermoregulatory observations in soccer match play: professional and recreational level applications using an intestinal pill system to measure core temperature
Andrew M. Edwards,Niall Clark +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the application of an intestinal pill system to measure core temperature during dynamic, field-based, soccer matches where technological limitations have previously limited match-play observations.

Pacing and Awareness: Brain Regulation of Physical Activity
Andrew M. Edwards,Remco Polman +1 more
TL;DR: The role of the brain in managing and distributing effort to successfully accomplish physical tasks has been examined in this paper, where a central regulator operates at different levels of awareness, such that minor homeostatic challenges are addressed automatically without conscious awareness, while larger metabolic disturbances attract conscious awareness and evoke a behavioural response.

Density-Driven Flows in Evaporating Binary Liquid Droplets.
TL;DR: It is reported, through the first use of rotating optical coherence tomography, that a change in the flow pattern and speed occurs when evaporating binary liquid droplets are tilted, conclusively showing that gravitational effects dominate the flow.
Adaptation to hot environmental conditions: an exploration of the performance basis, procedures and future directions to optimise opportunities for elite athletes.
Joshua H. Guy,Glen B. Deakin,Andrew M. Edwards,Andrew M. Edwards,Catherine M. Miller,David B. Pyne,David B. Pyne +6 more
TL;DR: It appears that worthwhile acclimation is achievable for endurance athletes via both short-and medium-length protocols but more is gained using MTHA, whereas it is also conceivable that heat acclimations may be counterproductive for sprinters.
