A system and method are provided for pessimism reduction of a timing database provided for optimization of a circuit design. Pessimism is reduced through generation of a hybrid graph-based static timing analysis (GBA) and path-based static timing analysis (PBA STA) database. PBA is selectively performed on the most critical GBA identified timing violations with the goal of reducing erroneous pessimism in operational timing characteristics passed on to the physical implementation corrective optimizer module to thereby reduce unnecessary fixing and transformations upon the circuit design to correspondingly reduce design time, temporary storage space, needed processing power for timing closure and to result in a finished operable and tangible circuit device with reduced area, power requirements, and decreased cost.

A method of performing simultaneous multi-corner static timing analysis (STA) on a design for an integrated circuit is provided. This method can include reading design data including a netlist, parasitics, and libraries at a plurality of corners. Each corner can represent a set of process, temperature, and voltage conditions. Using the design data as inputs, a plurality of operations can be performed to generate timing reports regarding the design at the plurality of corners. Notably, each operation has a single control flow and uses vectors of samples for performing the plurality of operations. Each sample is a value associated with a corner. This method minimizes computational resource and memory usage as well as accelerates the turn around time of multi-corner analysis.

A method for efficient multithreaded analysis of a timing graph is described. The method is applicable to multithreaded common path pessimism removal, critical path traversing for timing report generation, and other types of analysis requiring traversal of sub-graphs of timing graph. In order to achieve high efficiency and scalability for parallel multithreaded execution, the number of access locks is minimized. One parent computation thread and multiple child threads are employed. The parent computational thread identifies the tasks for analysis and distributes them among child threads. Each child thread identifies a sub-graph to be analyzed, creates a thread-specific replica of the identified sub-graph, and performs the analysis required. After completing the analysis, the child thread transfers the results back to the main timing graph and waits for next task. As all data structures of each child thread are accessed only by the child thread owing them, no access locks are required for construction and processing of thread specific graph replica of the timing sub-graph. The construction of each thread specific graph replica is performed by the child thread without locking the main timing graph data structures. Access locks are used only for transferring results of the analysis back to the main timing graph where the results computed by all child threads are combined together.

Static timing analysis attempts to exhaustively analyze all critical paths of a design. With ever decreasing geometries and ever increasing design complexity, manually identifying timing violations with standard static timing analysis can be very complex and time consuming. A static timing analysis tool can advantageously manage multiple runs having different modes and corners and automatically merge the results generated by the runs. The STA tool can perform the runs either in parallel or in series. Advantageously, the STA tool can save the full timing analysis generated by each run and then extract information from these saved results to form merged results for the design. These merged results can provide different levels of analysis coverage, supply path information at various levels of detail, allow selectable accessibility to information, and highlight propagation of timing changes/violations in the design.
