Constraints to commercialization of algal fuels.

The rapid growth of human population has led to mounting energy demands, which is projected to increase by 50% or more by 2030. The natural petroleum can not catch-up the current consumption rate, which is already reported to be 105 times faster than nature can create. Besides, the use of fossil fuels is devastating to our environment through greenhouse gas emissions and consequent global warming. Therefore, the search for ‘clean’ energy has become the most overwhelming challenges. Currently, several alternatives are being studied and implemented. Biofuels, fuels from living organisms, provide environmental benefits, since their use leads to a decrease in the harmful emissions of CO2 and hydrocarbons and, to the elimination of SOx emissions, with a consequent decrease in the greenhouse effects. Unfortunately, the present biofuel projections are based on feed-stocks that are also food commodities and resources suitable for conventional agriculture. One possibility to overcome the problem is the cultivation of micro-algae and switching to third generation biofuels, which seem to be a promising source since algae are able to efficiently convert sunlight, water, and CO2 into a variety of products suitable for renewable energy applications. Therefore, this review is intended to recapitulate current works on micro-algal biofuel production potential and discuss possible ways to put it into practice. This review starts by highlighting the advantages and various forms of micro-algal biofuels. Some of the micro-algal species proved to be suitable for biofuel production so far are considered, with particular emphasis on Scenedesmus obliquus. The recent attempts and achievements in improving the economies of production through genetic and metabolic engineering of micro-algal strains are also addressed. Other potential applications such as wastewater treatment and CO2 mitigation that can be coupled with biofuel production are described. Finally, the promises and challenges of algae to biofuel industry are uncovered.

Microalgae to biofuels: ‘Promising’ alternative and renewable energy, review

Microalgal biomass is processed into products by two main process steps: 1) harvesting and dewatering; and 2) extraction, fractionation and conversion. The performance of unit operations for harvesting and dewatering is often expressed in qualitative terms, like “high energy consumption” and “low in operational cost”. Moreover, equipment is analysed as stand-alone unit operations, which do not interact in a chain of operations. This work concerns a quantitative techno-economic analysis of different large-scale harvesting and dewatering systems with focus on processing cost, energy consumption and resource recovery. Harvesting and dewatering are considered both as a single operation and as combinations of sequential operations. The economic evaluation shows that operational costs and energy consumption are in the range 0.5–2 €·kg− 1 algae and 0.2–5 kWh·kg− 1 of algae, respectively, for dilute solutions from open cultivation systems. Harvesting and dewatering of the dilute systems with flocculation results in the lowest energy requirement. However, due to required chemicals and loss of flocculants, these systems end at the same cost level as mechanical harvesting systems. For closed cultivation systems the operational costs decrease to 0.1–0.6 €·kg− 1 algae and the energy consumption to 0.1–0.7 kWh·kg− 1 algae. For all harvesting and dewatering systems, labour has a significant contribution to the total costs. The total costs can be reduced by a high level of automation, despite the higher associated investment costs. The analysis shows that a single step operation can be satisfactory if the operation reaches high biomass concentrations. Two-step operations, like pressure filtration followed by spiral plate technology or centrifugation, are attractive from an economic point of view, just as the operation chain of flocculation followed by membrane filtration and a finishing step with spiral plate technology or centrifugation.

Techno-economic evaluation of microalgae harvesting and dewatering systems

The microalgal-based industries are facing a number of important challenges that in turn affect their economic viability. Arguably the most important of these are associated with the high costs of harvesting and dewatering of the microalgal cells, the costs and sustainability of nutrient supplies and costly methods for large scale oil extraction. Existing harvesting technologies, which can account for up to 50% of the total cost, are not economically feasible because of either requiring too much energy or the addition of chemicals. Fungal-assisted flocculation is currently receiving increased attention because of its high harvesting efficiency. Moreover, some of fungal and microalgal strains are well known for their ability to treat wastewater, generating biomass which represents a renewable and sustainable feedstock for bioenergy production. We screened 33 fungal strains, isolated from compost, straws and soil for their lipid content and flocculation efficiencies against representatives of microalgae commercially used for biodiesel production, namely the heterotrophic freshwater microalgae Chlorella protothecoides and the marine microalgae Tetraselmis suecica. Lipid levels and composition were analyzed in fungal-algal pellets grown on media containing alternative carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources from wheat straw and swine wastewater, respectively. The biomass of fungal-algal pellets grown on swine wastewater was used as feedstock for the production of value-added chemicals, biogas, bio-solids and liquid petrochemicals through pyrolysis. Co-cultivation of microalgae and filamentous fungus increased total biomass production, lipid yield and wastewater bioremediation efficiency. Fungal-assisted microalgal flocculation shows significant potential for solving the major challenges facing the commercialization of microalgal biotechnology, namely (i) the efficient and cost-effective harvesting of freshwater and seawater algal strains; (ii) enhancement of total oil production and optimization of its composition; (iii) nutrient supply through recovering of the primary nutrients, nitrogen and phosphates and microelements from wastewater. The biomass generated was thermochemically converted into biogas, bio-solids and a range of liquid petrochemicals including straight-chain C12 to C21 alkanes which can be directly used as a glycerine-free component of biodiesel. Pyrolysis represents an efficient alternative strategy for biofuel production from species with tough cell walls such as fungi and fungal-algal pellets.

Fungal-assisted algal flocculation: application in wastewater treatment and biofuel production

Many countries have been experienced an increase in protein consumption due to the population growth and adoption of protein-rich dietaries. Unfortunately, conventional-based protein agroindustry is associated with environmental impacts that might aggravate as the humankind increase. Thus, it is important to screen for novel protein sources that are environmentally friendly. Microalgae farming is a promising alternative to couple the anthropic emissions with the production of food and feed. Some microalgae show protein contents two times higher than conventional protein sources. The use of whole microalgae biomass as a protein source in food and feed is simple and well-established. Conversely, the production of microalgae protein supplements and isolates requires the development of feasible and robust processes able to fractionate the microalgae biomass in different value-added products. Since most of the proteins are inside the microalgae cells, several techniques of disruption have been proposed to increase the efficiency to extract them. After the disruption of the microalgae cells, the proteins can be extracted, concentrated, isolated or purified allowing the development of different products. This critical review addresses the current state of the production of microalgae proteins for multifarious applications, and possibilities to concatenate the production of proteins and advanced biofuels.

Oil-accumulating microalgae have the potential to enable large-scale biodiesel production without competing for arable land or biodiverse natural landscapes. However, microalgae harvesting/dewatering is a major obstruction to industrial-scale processing for biofuel production. The dilute nature of microalgae in cultivation creates high operational costs for harvesting, thus making microalgal fuel less economical. Within the last decade, significant advances have been made to develop new technologies for dewatering or harvesting of microalgae. The choice of which harvesting technique to apply depends on the microalgae cell size and the desired product. Microalgae dewatering processes can broadly be classified as primary and secondary dewatering. This article provides an overview of current dewatering techniques along with a critical analysis of costs and efficiencies, and provides recommendations towards cost-effective dewatering.

Critical analysis of current Microalgae dewatering techniques

Filtration of aqueous liquids has wide implications, for example for provision of clean drinking water. Nevertheless, many people still lack access to safe water and suffer from preventable water-borne microbial diseases. This study reports a new ultrafiltration-range separation technology using a gelatinous layer of aluminium hydroxide polyhydrate as a secondary membrane on a retaining fabric that enables simple and cost-effective production of filtered water. Properties include at least 4-fold higher flux rates than currently available membranes, pressure-resistance, impenetrability to filtered particles, easy cleaning by backwashing and simple, cost-effective replacement by gel injection. Depending on the substrate, filtration is achieved through a packed bed of 1-2 nm hydrate gel globules, partly by mechanical straining with a size exclusion of approx. 10 nm and partly by physical adsorption. As a result, filtration of water (e.g. turbid river water) contaminated with colloids and microorganisms, including viruses, yields clear water that is free of measurable particles or detectable microorganisms. However, small water-soluble molecules (salts, sugars, proteins) remain in the filtrate. The findings demonstrate the potential for wide applicability of hydrate gels in high-flux and low-cost water purification devices.
