Assessment of Source Code Obfuscation Techniques
Alessio Viticchié,Leonardo Regano,Marco Torchiano,Cataldo Basile,Mariano Ceccato,Paolo Tonella,Roberto Tiella +6 more
- 01 Oct 2016
TL;DR: In this article, the effectiveness and efficiency of VarMerge was evaluated with student participants performing two attack tasks on clear and obfuscated versions of two applications written in C. The experiment showed a significant effect of data obfuscation on both the time required to complete and the successful attack efficiency.

Empirical assessment of the effort needed to attack programs protected with client/server code splitting
Alessio Viticchié,Leonardo Regano,Cataldo Basile,Marco Torchiano,Mariano Ceccato,Paolo Tonella +5 more
TL;DR: Comparing non protected code vs. code splitting protected code, considering two levels of the chunk size parameter, in order to assess the effectiveness of the protection - in terms of both attack time and success rate - and to understand the attack strategy and process used to overcome the protection.

Estimating Software Obfuscation Potency with Artificial Neural Networks
Daniele Canavese,Leonardo Regano,Cataldo Basile,Alessio Viticchié +3 more
- 14 Sep 2017
TL;DR: This approach uses neural networks to accurately predict the value of complexity metrics after an obfuscation transformation is applied to a code region and is the first step towards a decision support to optimally protect software applications.

Privacy issues of ISPs in the modern web
Ali Safari Khatouni,Martino Trevisan,Leonardo Regano,Alessio Viticchié +3 more
- 01 Oct 2017
TL;DR: It is illustrated that sensible information, such as website history, is still exposed to passive monitoring and general guidelines and best practices to cope with the collection of network traffic measurements are provided.
