Luminescent polymers are prepared from thermosetting unsaturated polyesters, suspending fillers and phosphorescent pigments and utilized to make gel coated articles and molded, cast and fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) articles. The preferred thermosetting unsaturated polyester resins are prepared by condensing mixtures of ethylenically unsaturated and aromatic dicarboxylic acids and anhydrides with dihydric alcohols and a polymerizable vinylidene monomer. Preferred suspending fillers and thixotropic modifiers include silica flakes (particularly precipitated and fumed silica and fine to coarse sand), microspheres, glass fibers and other short fibers, nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, pumice, magnesium sulfate, calcium carbonate, bentonite and the various clays and thixotropic modifiers and mixtures thereof. Preferred phosphorescent pigments include alkaline earth aluminate phosphors, zinc sulfide phosphors and mixtures of these phosphors, particularly those phosphors activated by multiple metals and/or rare earths. The luminescent resins may be rendered fire retardant with halogenated polyester resins and/or additives and made flexible by the addition of flexible resins.

Preferred suspending fillers and thixotropic modifiers include silica, microspheres, glass fibers and other short fibers, nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, pumice, magnesium sulfate, calcium carbonate, bentonite and the various clays and thixotropic modifiers and mixtures thereof. Preferred phosphorescent pigments include alkaline earth aluminate phosphors, zinc sulfide phosphors and mixtures of these phosphors.

Consequently, this invention provides a phosphor for displays having high luminance, which emits light when excited by a pulse electron beam having an accelerating voltage of 5-15 kV.

A rare-earth and alkali sulphide, a method for preparing same and the use thereof as a pigment, are disclosed. The sulphide has formula ABS2, wherein A is at least one alkali and B is at least one rare earth, and consists of grains having an average size no greater than 1.5 νm. The method for preparing said sulphide comprises exposing at least one rare-earth carbonate or hydroxycarbonate to at least one alkaline element compound, then heating them in the presence of at least one gas selected from hydrogen sulphide or carbon sulphide, and optionally deagglomerating the resulting material. The sulphide may be used as a pigment in plastics, paints, surface coatings, rubbers, ceramics, glazes, papers, inks, cosmetics, dyes, laminated coatings and materials containing or produced from at least one inorganic binder.

New phosphors which may be activated to luminesce in the red to green portion of the spectrum have an alpha crystal structure isostructural with Ba 2 MnS 3 and the composition Ba.sub.2 Zn.sub.1.sub.-y Cd.sub.y S.sub.3 : A.sub.w.sup.. zZnS wherein A is an activator element selected from the group consisting of manganese, europium, cerium, lead and terbium, y is a numerical value in the range from 0 to 1, z is a numerical value in the range from 0 to 20, and w is a numerical value in the range from 0.00001 to 0.1. Methods of making these phosphors are described.
