We investigate novel phases that emerge from the interplay of electron correlations and strong spin-orbit interactions. We focus on describing the topological semimetal, a three-dimensional phase of a magnetic solid, and argue that it may be realized in a class of pyrochlore iridates (such as ${\mathrm{Y}}_{2}$Ir${}_{2}$O${}_{7}$) based on calculations using the $\text{LDA}+U$ method. This state is a three-dimensional analog of graphene with linearly dispersing excitations and provides a condensed-matter realization of Weyl fermions that obeys a two-component Dirac equation. It also exhibits remarkable topological properties manifested by surface states in the form of Fermi arcs, which are impossible to realize in purely two-dimensional band structures. For intermediate correlation strengths, we find this to be the ground state of the pyrochlore iridates, coexisting with noncollinear magnetic order. A narrow window of magnetic ``axion'' insulator may also be present. An applied magnetic field is found to induce a metallic ground state.

Topological semimetal and Fermi-arc surface states in the electronic structure of pyrochlore iridates

Weyl and Dirac semimetals are three-dimensional phases of matter with gapless electronic excitations that are protected by topology and symmetry. As three-dimensional analogs of graphene, they have generated much recent interest. Deep connections exist with particle physics models of relativistic chiral fermions, and, despite their gaplessness, to solid-state topological and Chern insulators. Their characteristic electronic properties lead to protected surface states and novel responses to applied electric and magnetic fields. The theoretical foundations of these phases, their proposed realizations in solid-state systems, and recent experiments on candidate materials as well as their relation to other states of matter are reviewed.

First-principles band theory, properly augmented by topological considerations, has provided a remarkably successful framework for predicting new classes of topological materials. This Colloquium discusses the underpinnings of the topological band theory and its materials applications.

Within the past 20 years or so, there has occurred an explosion of interest in the magnetic behavior of pyrochlore oxides of the type $A_{2}^{3+}$$B_{2}^{4+}$O$_{7}$ where $A$ is a rare-earth ion and $B$ is usually a transition metal. Both the $A$ and $B$ sites form a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra which is the quintessential framework for a geometrically frustrated magnet. In these systems the natural tendency to form long range ordered ground states in accord with the Third Law is frustrated, resulting in some novel short range ordered alternatives such as spin glasses, spin ices and spin liquids and much new physics. This article attempts to review the myriad of properties found in pyrochlore oxides, mainly from a materials perspective, but with an appropriate theoretical context.

Mott insulators are driven by strong Coulomb repulsion and topological insulators by strong spin–orbit coupling. Although these effects are normally in competition, in some cases the Coulomb interaction can enhance the effects of spin–orbit coupling. Together these interactions could lead to gapless spin-only excitations on the surface of a strongly correlated insulator.

Mott physics and band topology in materials with strong spin-orbit interaction

We report that Ln 2 Ir 2 O 7 for Ln = Nd, Sm, and Eu have metal–insulator transitions (MITs) at 36, 117, and 120 K, respectively. Their electrical resistivities and thermoelectric powers are not discontinuous and exhibit no thermal hysteresis at their transition temperatures T MI , indicating second-order phase transitions. In this letter, we focus on the MIT of Sm 2 Ir 2 O 7 . The specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility show a clear anomaly at T MI . These results indicate that this MIT involves a magnetic ordering produced by 5 d electrons in Ir.
