Metal carbide and metal nitride powders produced by the carbothermal reduction of one or more metal oxides reacted with a binder material and a carbonaceous additive or optionally, a binder capable of supplying carbon to the reaction. The metal oxides are selected from among SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , HfO 2 and B 2 O 3 and are combined with the binder in the presence of carbon to form granules having a controlled pore volume. The granules are then subjected to a carbothermal reduction reaction, in the presence of a nitrogen or a neutral atmosphere, to produce metal nitrides or metal carbides respectively, having an excess of carbon incorporated therein. The product is subsequently heated to react the excess carbon within the compound with oxygen from the atmosphere to form carbon monoxide gas, which may be removed by an optional exhaust system. The remaining metal carbide or metal nitride powder may then be collected and used in various applications such as the production of ceramic objects.

Method of making metal carbide and nitride powders

PURPOSE: To obtain readily sinterable fine high-purity SiC without requiring pulverization, by firing a blend of a substance containing silicon with a substance containing carbon and a specific metallic compound capable of suppressing granular growth of SiC in a nonoxidizing atmosphere while heating CONSTITUTION: A blend of (A) a silicon-containing substance which is a compound capable of producing SiO 2 by heating at ≥1,000°C in an oxidizing atmosphere, eg organosilicon compound expressed by the formula (R 1 WR 4 are 1W6C hydrocarbon group; n is 1W10) with (B) a carbon-contatinig substance capable of providing ≤2wt% formed ash when heating at ≥1,000°C in an oxidizing atmosphere in an amount to give 10W30 atomic ratio [C/Si in the component (A)] remaining when heating the component (B) at 800°C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, eg resol type phenolic resin, and (C) 001W2wt% (expressed in terms of element) one or more elements except those of atomic numbers 1, 4W7, 14, 15, 33, 43, 61, 87, 88 and actinoid elements in groups 1AW7A, 8, 1BW5B elements of the long form of the periodic table and/or compound containing the elements is treated in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at 800W1,400°C to give a carbonized material, which is then heat-treated at 1,600W2,000°C COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio

Production of silicon carbide

A method and apparatus are provided for producing a product comprising a carbide compound, such as for example silicon carbide. A reactor is provided which has a chamber defined therein which is divided into a combustion zone and a reaction zone. A combustible mixture is injected into the combustion zone and accordingly combusted to form hot combustion products. At least one reactant (i.e. silane) is injected at the boundary between the zones so as to be carried into the reaction zone by the combustion products and react to form raw product comprising the carbide compound. The raw product can be purified by subsequent processing to remove oxygen and convert by-products to the desired carbide compound. The product of the invention has a low level of impurities and is made up of submicron, highly uniform particles. This makes the product particularly useful for fabrication of sintered ceramic parts.

Preparation of ultrafine silicon carbide powder

PURPOSE: To form easily and continuously hyperfine SiC powder having β-type crystal form at a low cost by using a surfactant capable of remarkably improving the wetting properties of hyperfine carbon powder to a liq. dispersion medium contg. a dissolved carbonaceous binder. CONSTITUTION: A granulated starting material consisting of silica, carbon and a carbonaceous binder is charged into a reactor from an upper part 1, dropped through the preheating zone 2, and heated in the heating zone 3 with indirect electric heating means 8, 9 to cause an SiC forming reaction while controlling the load and the dropping rate so as to provide nearly uniform temp. distribution to the charged starting material and the reaction product in the horizontal direction. The reaction product is dropped into the cooling zone 4, cooled in the nonoxidizing atmosphere, and discharged from a lower part 5. The carbon in the granulated starting material has 1W1,000m 2 /g specific surface area, and it is mixed with the carbonaceous binder using a liq. dispersion medium and a surfactant before granulation so as to control the reaction temp. in the zone 3 to 1,500W2,000°C. Manufacture of hyperfine silicon carbide powder

PURPOSE: Silica, carbon and a carbonaceous binder are mixed in a specific manner and granulated and the resultant starting material is introduced into the reactor where heat is applied to effect the reaction leading to SiC, thus producing ultrafine particles of silicon carbide suitable for producing sintered silicon carbide products. CONSTITUTION: A carbon powder of 1W1,000m 2 /g specific surface area and a carbonaceous binder are mixed using a liquid dispersant and, when necessary, a surface active agent, then the mixture is mixed with silica and a carbonaceous binder and granulated. The resultant granular starting material is charged from the hopper 19 on the reactor 6 having the preheating zone 2, the heating zone 3 and the cooling zone 4 where the particles fall down with their own weight to the heating zone 3 where they are heated with the graphite heater 8 so that they are kept at 1,500W2,000°C to effect the reaction into SiC. The reaction product comes down to the cooling zone 4 where they are cooled in a nonoxidative atmosphere and discharged whereby the objective ultrafine particles of silicon carbide are obtained.
