A home network message specification for white goods based on power line communication is proposed. It is designed for white goods such as air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines etc. The proposed home network message specification is composed of a virtual device service and a device-specific attribute. For practical implementation, an application software and two types of power line modules are used.

A broadcast system, method and apparatus providing content on demand. In one embodiment, the disclosed broadcast system includes a server that broadcasts meta-data to a plurality of clients. The meta-data describes a plurality of data files that are to be broadcast or potentially broadcast later by the server. Each client receives the broadcasted meta-data from the server and updates and maintains a local meta-data table and a content rating table. Based on the meta-data, previous access habits of the user and optional user classifications, the client system selectively receives and/or stores the data files that are later broadcast by the server. In one embodiment, the client systems transmit back to the server ratings of each one of the data files described by the meta-data based on the user's previously accessed data files and optional user classifications. The server then determines the data files to be broadcast and the broadcast schedule based on the ratings received from the clients.

Method and apparatus to determine broadcast content and scheduling in a broadcast system

A service provider broadcast system and method are described. The method includes acquiring network service information regarding broadcast service content to be broadcast by a broadcast service system over a predetermined period. Using the network service information, a composite content list is created, including meta-data describing service provider content available from the service provider system and the broadcast service content. The composite content listed is broadcast to client systems, which in turn, provide ratings for the service provider and broadcast service content described by the composite content list. Using the received ratings, the service provider system selects a portion of the broadcast service content and generates a broadcast schedule for the selected content. The broadcast schedule is then broadcast to the client systems to enable the client systems to store one or more of the content data files from the selected portion of the broadcast service content.

Method and apparatus for combining broadcast schedules and content on a digital broadcast-enabled client platform

A method and apparatus for automatically delivering data files (e.g. television and movies) via a personalized channel to a user, that are based on a user's profile and viewing habits, are provided. A client receives meta-data broadcasts from a server system that includes descriptions of a plurality of data files currently being broadcasted or to be broadcast by the server system. In response to a content rating table that is based on a user's profile and viewing habits, a data file is automatically selected. The selected data file is displayed on a personalized channel on a display device to the user. The selected data file can be, for example, a currently broadcasting data file or a data file stored in a cache memory of the client. Thus, the user only needs to tune to his or her personalized channel to view personalized content.

Wireless technology is an attractive option to network devices in the home as it does not require rewiring the home. The media access protocol (MAC) plays a crucial role in allowing multiple devices to transmit and receive on the shared wireless medium and thereby determining the efficiency of a wireless home network (WiHN). It is found that many of the protocols proposed to date like the Distributed Foundation Wireless MAC (DFWMAC) in the IEEE 802.11 standard have poor performance at high data rates (100 Mbps). We modify the slotted-idle sense multiple access protocol and propose a simple and efficient MAC protocol which fits well with the WiHN architecture. We present a queuing analysis and simulation results of the performance of the wireless home network MAC (WiHNMAC) protocol.
