TL;DR: Before widespread use of highly-active antiretroviral therapy (before 1996), time since seroconversion and age at serconversion were the major determinants of survival and development of AIDS in Europe, North America, and Australia.

- 02 Jan 2004
TL;DR: Estimates of the risk of AIDS according to the current viral load and CD4 cell count in untreated individuals and those treated in the zidovudine monotherapy era should prove useful information when deciding whether to initiate antiretroviral therapy in HIV- infected individuals.

Comparison of dual nucleoside-analogue reverse-transcriptase inhibitor regimens with and without nelfinavir in children with HIV-1 who have not previously been treated: the PENTA 5 randomised trial
Aboulker Jp,A Babiker,A Campagnucci,JH Darbyshire,M Debre,C. Giaquinto,DM Gibb,Lynda Harper,Yacine Saidi,A S Walker +9 more
TL;DR: Regimens containing abacavir were more effective than zidovudine/lamivudine, and such regimens could be combined with protease inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors for safe and effective treatment of previously untreated children with HIV-1.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy started in infants under 3 months of age: 72-week follow-up for CD4 cell count, viral load and drug resistance outcome.
Aboulker Jp,A Babiker,Marie-Laure Chaix,Alexandra Compagnucci,JH Darbyshire,M Debre,Albert Faye,Carlo Giaquinto,Diana M. Gibb,Lynda Harper,Yacine Saidi,AS Walker +11 more
TL;DR: Early treatment with stavudine, didanosine and nelfinavir was well tolerated and associated with good clinical and immunological outcomes at week 72, however, a high rate of virological failure with emergence of genotypic resistance is of great concern.

Virological and immunological outcomes at 3 years after starting antiretroviral therapy with regimens containing non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, protease inhibitor, or both in INITIO: open-label randomised trial.
Patrick Yeni,David A. Cooper,Aboulker Jp,A Babiker,Dianne Carey,JH Darbyshire,Marco Floridia,Pierre-Marie Girard,Ruth L. Goodall,MH Hooker,Anne M Mijch,Meiffredy,Salzberger B +12 more
TL;DR: Starting antiretroviral therapy with a three-drug/two-class regimen including efavirenz was better than starting with regimens including nelfinavir or efvirenz plus nELFinavir in terms of virological suppression and durability of the initial regimen.
