The objective of this research work is to look into the role of policies and context in framing the composition of Web services. Context supports the development of adaptable Web services and policies specify the behavior of Web services engaged in composition. In this paper, we present this research work's outcome, namely a context-based multi-type policy for Web services composition in which the binding between Web services occurs at four levels: component level to deal with Web services' definitions and capabilities, composite level to address how Web services are discovered and combined, semantic level to handle the semantic heterogeneity that can arise between Web services, and resource level to focus on the performance of Web services. Because of the composition complex-nature, the proposed approach uses three types of policies: engagement policies assess a Web service participation in a given composition, mediation policies deal with the semantic heterogeneity by tacking into account the mappings and conversions between component Web services, and deployment policies manage the interactions between component Web services and computing resources. Policies manage the transitions between the four levels and context caters the necessary information that tracks the composition progress.

Towards a context-based multi-type policy approach for Web services composition

This paper presents an approach that uses policies to manage contextdriven transactional Web services. Context feeds policies with details on Web services like current status, which permits aligning the behavior of these Web services to the transactional properties they need to satisfy. Context refers here to any information on the interactions a Web service initiates with peers and external environment. Three types of transactional properties are used namely pivot, compensatable, and retriable. Each property satisfaction calls for a set of policies that are specified with a policy language like WSPL. This paper also presents the adaptation strategy that supports developing context-driven transactional Web services. A prototype that implements this strategy is discussed in the paper, too.

Policies for context-driven transactional web services

Making Web services context-aware is a challenge. This is like making Web service expose appropriate behaviors in response to changes detected in the environment. Context awareness requires a review and extension of the current execution model of Web services. This paper discusses the seamless combination of context and policy to manage behaviors that Web services expose during composition and in response to changes in the environment. For this purpose, a four-layer approach is devised. These layers are denoted by policy, user, Web service, and resource. In this approach, behavior management and binding are subject to executing policies of types permission, obligation, restriction, and dispensation. A prototype that illustrates how context and policy are woven into Web services composition scenarios is presented as well.

Toward Behavioral Web Services Using Policies

We present a policy-centered QoS meta-model which can be used by service providers and consumers alike to express capabilities, requirements, constraints, and general management characteristics relevant for SLA establishment in service aggregations. We also provide a QoS assertion model which is generic, domain-independent and conforming to the WS-Policy syntax and semantics. Using these two models, assertions over acceptable and required values for QoS properties can be expressed across the different service layers and service roles.

Policy-Based Management of QoS in Service Aggregations

Web service adaptation: A decade's overview

When no single Web service can fulfil a user's request, providers often turn to composite Web services. However, developing a composite Web service is not simple and deploying the composition specification at runtime consists of several processes. Developers and deployers of composite Web services can use policies in various scenarios, from the announcement of Web services to the compatibility between Web services and composite Web services. Mapping guidelines for a Web service's behavior to policies can ensure an individual Web service's smooth engagement into a composite Web service
