Web Developer.com Guide to Building Intelligent Web Sites with JavaScript

[...]

Nigel Ford
9 Mar 1998
TL;DR: Nigel Ford eases you into the basics of JavaScript and then, with the help of dozens of vivid examples, teaches you basic and advanced techniques for adding intelligence to your Web pages.
Abstract: From the Publisher: Featuring a rapid skill-building format, this book is organized around goals you want to accomplish with JavaScript rather than the language's technical aspects. Even if you've never programmed a line of code in your life, you'll quickly learn how to enliven your site with the smarts it needs to automatically tailor its content to an individual user's needs, solve problems, make decisions, create new pages on the fly, and even close sales! Nigel Ford eases you into the basics of JavaScript and then, with the help of dozens of vivid examples, teaches you basic and advanced techniques for adding intelligence to your Web pages; how to store different types of knowledge in your Web pages; techniques for handling requests, accessing files, and using databases in server-side JavaScript; programming for language processing, searching, problem solving, and game playing; and how to program for both the client side and server side with JavaScript.

TL;DR: The merits of JavaScript as a first programming language for Multimedia students are argued, the content of modules that use this approach are described, and experiences and findings on first delivery are reported.
Abstract: Whilst there has been much discussion of Java as a first programming language, JavaScript has been comparatively ignored. This paper argues the merits of JavaScript as a first programming language for Multimedia students. It then describes the content of modules that use this approach, and reports experiences and findings on first delivery. As a result of positive experiences we are now planning to use JavaScript as precursor to Java for mainstream Computing students.

JavaScript Pocket Reference

TL;DR: The JavaScript Pocket Reference as discussed by the authors is a companion volume to JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 3rd Edition, 3.2, which provides a complete overview of the core JavaScript language and contains summaries of both core and client-side objects, methods and properties.
Abstract: From the Publisher: JavaScript is a powerful, object-based scripting language that can be embedded directly in HTML pages. It allows you to create dynamic, interactive Web-based applications that run completely within a Web browser — JavaScript is the language of choice for developing Dynamic HTML (DHTML) content. JavaScript can be integrated effectively with CGI and Java to produce sophisticated Web applications, although, in many cases, JavaScript eliminates the need for complex CGI scripts and Java applets altogether. The JavaScript Pocket Reference is a companion volume to JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 3rd Edition. This small book, covering JavaScript 1.2, is a handy reference guide to this popular language for Web development. It provides a complete overview of the core JavaScript language and contains summaries of both core and client-side objects, methods, and properties.
