TL;DR: In the literature on vocational psychology, it has become trite to observe that the mid-20th century entry of women into the world of work represents one of the major social phenomena of our time.
Abstract: In the literature on vocational psychology, it has become trite to
observe that the mid-20th century entry of women into the world
of work represents one of the major social phenomena of our time.
Women now constitute the majority of the American workforce, their
presence taken for granted by employers, social and economic policy
makers, the general public, and women themselves. Not surprisingly,
the study of women’s career development is arguably the most vibrant
and productive area in vocational psychology today (Fitzgerald,
Fassinger, & Betz, 1995).
TL;DR: The Golden Rule has received remarkably little philosophical discussion as mentioned in this paper and no book has ever been written on it, and articles devoted to it have been exceedingly few, and usually not very searching.
Abstract: The Golden Rule has received remarkably little philosophical discussion. No book has ever been written on it, and articles devoted to it have been exceedingly few, and usually not very searching. It is usually mentioned, where it is mentioned at all, only in passing, and most of these passing remarks have either been false, trite, or misleading, though some of them, as we shall see, have certainly been interesting enough. Considering its obvious importance and its almost universal acceptance, this dearth of philosophical discussion is unfortunate, and also somewhat surprising. One of the things I hope to show about it, though only incidentally, is that there are problems connected with it of the utmost subtlety, worthy of the attention of even the most minute philosophers
TL;DR: For instance, this paper pointed out that our own generation has given the Four Emperors less attention than did the two generations which preceded it, and that the most valuable contribution has come from the numismatists, who have left the believers in provincial ‘nationalism’ with the need for a radical restatement of their case.
Abstract: For offering Dr. Last observations on a topic which over thirty years ago he reasonably described as ‘trite’ I have little excuse save that our own generation has given the Four Emperors less attention than did the two generations which preceded it. Perhaps the most valuable contribution has come from the numismatists, who have left the believers in provincial ‘nationalism’ with the need for a radical restatement of their case. Epigraphical studies, moreover, have told us more, but not nearly enough, about the origins of the chief actors in the drama, the soldiers and their commanders. Above all, the flood of writing on the thought of Tacitus has continued unchecked. A bibliography here would be tedious but one example will illustrate the theme of this paper. In 1939 Paola Zancan, later reviewed by Dr. Last in this Journal, sought to analyse each of the ancient literary versions of the year 69, and to show how each author's interpretation sprang from his personality, from his position in society, or from the time at which he wrote.
