TL;DR: Ten species of prosobranch gastropod veligers collected from the open waters of the North Atlantic Ocean have been identified by comparison of their larval shells with the protoconchs of identifiable juvenile or adult museum specimens.
Abstract: 1. Ten species of prosobranch gastropod veligers collected from the open waters of the North Atlantic Ocean have been identified by comparison of their larval shells with the protoconchs of identifiable juvenile or adult museum specimens. The larvae described are those of Cymatium parthenopeum (von Salis), Cymatium nicobaricum (Roding), and Charonia variegata (Lamarck) belonging to the family Cymatiidae; Tonna galea (Linne) and Tonna maculosa (Dillwyn) belonging to the family Tonnidae; Phalium granulatum (Born) belonging to the family Cassidae; Thais haemastoma (Linne), a muricid; Philippia krebsii (Morch), an architectonicidae; Smaragdia viridis (Linne), a neritid; and Pedicularia sicula Swainson belonging to the family Ovulidae.2. The geographical distribution of the veligers of these ten gastropod species has been determined in the North and tropical Atlantic from approximately eight hundred and fifty plankton tows. The relationship between the North and Equatorial Atlantic circulation and the dispersa...
TL;DR: The information on gastropod distributions at different depth strata in the Sarawak EEZ could be useful in updating the Malaysian species diversity database.
Abstract: This study provides the first marine gastropod checklist from the Sarawak Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Gastropod samples were collected from selected stations in the Sarawak EEZ using an otter trawl net with a stretched mesh size of 38 mm at the cod end. The trawling operations were conducted more than 12 nautical miles from the coast, and the area was divided into three depth strata: I) 20–50 m, II) 50–100 m and III) 100–200 m. A total of 23 gastropod species were identified during the two-month sampling period from 16 August until 6 October 2015, representing 8 superfamilies, 15 families and 20 genera. Superfamily Tonnoidea was represented by 7 species, followed by Muricoidea (5 species), Cypraeoidea (4 species), and Buccinoidea and Conoidea (both with 2 species). Other superfamilies were represented by a single species. Only 3 species were obtained in 2 depth strata, namely Melo melo, Murex aduncospinosus and Tonna galea. In addition, 9, 13 and 4 species of gastropods were found in strata I, II and III, respectively. The information on gastropod distributions at different depth strata in the Sarawak EEZ could be useful in updating the Malaysian species diversity database
TL;DR: Two species of luminous marine snails are found on Borawazawa Beach, at Suyeyoshi Village, which is located on Hachijo Island, 157 miles south of Tokyo, during ebb tide on April 23, 1953.
Abstract: AMONG THE GASTROPODA Opisthobranchiata certain genera of the Polyceridae, Tethyidae, and Phillirhoidae are luminous. Among the Gastropoda Pulmonata two luminous species are known: Latianeritoides, fresh water limpets , first discovered in New Zealand by Suter (1890), and Dyakia striata, land snails, found by myself in Singapore in 1946. Luminous species of Gastropoda Prosobranchiata are very rare, however, according to E. N . Harvey in his book Bioluminescence (1952). Turner in 1948 informed him by letter that Tonna galea Linne, a marine snail, is luminescent. When this snail moves through water with its foot well extended, it emits a greenish-white light. A species of doubtful luminescence is also found among the heteropods (Pterotracheata) according to Keferstein in Bronn 's Tierreicb (1862-1 866). We have found two species of luminous marine snails on Borawazawa Beach, at Suyeyoshi Village, which is located on Hachijo Island , 157 miles south of Tokyo. This discovery was made during ebb tide on April 23, 1953. While I was strolling on the beach with 10 acquaintance, Mr . H . Okuyama, teacher of Suyeyoshi Primary School, he chanced to raise a stone, and we were both astonished to find under it some small marine snails which were emitting light as they rolled in the water. Excitedly we collected many specimens , examining them closely to find out if
TL;DR: A report is presented here on the simultaneous occurrence of two developmental strategies, i.e. planktonic larvae and advanced development in Tonna gatea.
Abstract: A report is presented here on the simultaneous occurrence of two developmental strategies, i.e. planktonic larvae and advanced development in Tonna gatea.
TL;DR: From a total of 934 plankton samples taken in the north and tropical Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas, 12.1 percent contained gastropod veligers which bore Folliculina simplex on their shells.
