TL;DR: In this paper, an automatic gas transfert machine has been built to avoid the troubles of a conventional vacuum line, which has been used to compress tritium gas under reduced pressure.
Abstract: For a very long time numerous devices have been proposed to compress the tritium gas stocked under reduced pressure. The Toepler pump is nevertheless the most utilized apparatus for this purpose, despite many disadvantages. To avoid the troubles of a conventional vacuum line. an automatic gas transfert machine has been built.
TL;DR: In this paper, a Toepler pump was used to compress Helium-3 to a pressure of 217 Torr by optical pumping of the 23S1 metastable atoms at 1 Torr pressure and it was verified that the gas remains polarized.
Abstract: Helium-3, polarized by optical pumping of the 23S1 metastable atoms at 1 Torr pressure, has been compressed to a pressure of 217 Torr and it has been verified that the gas remains polarized. 3He at 1 Torr was polarized and compressed into a storage bulb using a Toepler pump, and this was repeated with successive charges of 3He until the pressure in the storage bulb rose to 217 Torr after about 4 h of operation. Some of the gas was returned to the low pressure side of the equipment and its polarization was measured. The polarization attained before each charge was compressed was 0.04; the measured polarization of the returned gas was 0.03.
TL;DR: In this paper, the construction and operation of a compact automatic Toepler pump of the mercury piston type was described, where the mercury motion was controlled by a switching relay activated by electrodes so placed that at the ultimate of its stroke the air leak to the lower mercury reservoir was closed and an oil vacuum pump was started to evacuate it, and at the bottom of the stroke the vacuum pump is stopped and air leak opened to allow the mercury to rise in the piston chamber.
Abstract: The construction and operation of a compact automatic Toepler pump of the mercury piston type which has many advantages over previous designs are described. The mercury motion is controlled by a switching relay activated by electrodes so placed that at the ultimate of its stroke the air leak to the lower mercury reservoir is closed and an oil vacuum pump is started to evacuate it, and at the bottom of the stroke the vacuum pump is stopped and the air leak opened to allow the mercury to rise in the piston chamber. Pumping action is effected by two glass valves with conically ground seats in series in the gas inlet and outlet tubes.
TL;DR: In this article, a modified Toepler pump and gas microvolumetric device is described, which attains all the possibilities and precision of earlier arrangements, by the use of grease-free valves, demountable parts in a plastic material and a special connection between TOepler and gas volumeter.
Abstract: The paper describes a modified Toepler pump and gas microvolumetric device. By the use of grease-free valves, demountable parts in a plastic material and a special connection between Toepler pump and gas volumeter, an improved apparatus is realised which attains all the possibilities and precision of earlier arrangements.
