TL;DR: An electronic redeemable coupon generating system includes an encoder for encoding coupon-related data in a television signal transmission, the transmission including picture information for display on a television monitor screen; a decoder for receiving the TV signal transmission and extracting the couponrelated data therefrom; and a recording device for recording the extracted coupon- related data on a recording medium for subsequent readout and redemption as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: An electronic redeemable coupon generating system includes: an encoder for encoding coupon-related data in a television signal transmission, the transmission including picture information for display on a television monitor screen; a decoder for receiving the television signal transmission and extracting the coupon-related data therefrom; and a recording device for recording the extracted coupon-related data on a recording medium for subsequent readout and redemption. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the decoder includes a display driver for displaying indicia on a television monitor screen responsive to coupon-related data being encoded in the television signal transmission. Upon observing the indicia on the television monitor screen, the user can manually and selectively extract the coupon-related data from the television signal transmission. After an optional editing function, the extracted coupon-related data is stored on a recording medium such as a magnetically striped card. The decoder may be part of the standard circuitry of a closed-caption adapted or modified television set. Provisions are made for electronically entering paper coupon information into the system.
TL;DR: In this paper, an electronic device and method for accessing remote electronic facilities and displaying associated information on a conventional television set is presented, where the electronic device self-configures itself upon power-up or reset by initiating a data call to a configuring facility.
Abstract: An electronic device and method for accessing remote electronic facilities and displaying associated information on a conventional television set. The electronic device self-configures itself upon power-up or reset by initiating a data call to a configuring facility. Information related to available facilities and programming, autonomous mail checking is downloaded to the electronic device. The electronic device displays a menu including several user selectable facilities on the display for a user. The user chooses one of the options from the menu by use of a remote keypad control, similar to a conventional television remote control. The options available include printing, electronic mail and other news and information services. Interfacing the electronic device with a stylus-type pointing device permits sketching and drawing on the television, including superposition of images on captured television images. Captured images of graphics or text are optionally stored or forwarded to a user through a mail facility accessed through operation of the system.
TL;DR: In this article, the editing of television programmes in the home to exclude undesired sound or visual events (such as swearing or scenes of violence) is described. But this coding is used to identify a range of possibly undesirable events, the coding including a grading of the events in terms of their undesirability.
Abstract: In order to enable the editing of television programmes in the home to exclude undesired sound or visual events (such as swearing or scenes of violence), these events are identified by coding inserted in the television signal prior to mass distribution. Preferably this coding is used to identify a range of possibly undesirable events, the coding including a grading of the events in terms of their undesirability. In the home, the coding is extruded from the received television signal by a suitable decoder. This coding is compared with a preset code identifying the grade or grades of event to be excluded; on the basis of this comparison the television signal is doctored before output on a television set. To facilitate following of the programme being edited, only that portion of the television signal (sound or vision) carrying the undesired event is doctored.
TL;DR: Sustained exposure is a risk factor for behavioral problems, whereas early exposure that is subsequently reduced presents no additional risk, and concurrent exposure was more important than sustained or early exposure for social skills.
Abstract: BACKGROUND. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children ≥2 years of age limit daily media exposure to ≤1 to 2 hours and not have a television set in children9s bedrooms. However, there are limited prospective studies to address how timing of media exposure influences children9s health. OBJECTIVE. Our goal was to examine relations among children9s early, concurrent, and sustained television exposure and behavioral and social skills outcomes at 5.5 years. METHODS. We analyzed data collected prospectively from the Healthy Steps for Young Children national evaluation. Television exposure was defined as >2 hours of daily use (at 30–33 months and 5.5 years) and television in child9s bedroom (at 5.5 years). At 5.5 years, outcomes were assessed by using the Child Behavior Checklist and social skills using the Social Skills Rating System. Linear regression was used to estimate the effect of television exposure on behavioral and social skills outcomes. RESULTS. Sixteen percent of parents reported that their child watched >2 hours of television daily at 30 to 33 months only, 15% reported >2 hours of television daily at 5.5 years only, and 20% reported >2 hours of television daily at both times. Forty-one percent of the children had televisions in their bedrooms at 5.5 years. In adjusted analyses, sustained television viewing was associated with behavioral outcomes. Concurrent television exposure was associated with fewer social skills. For children with heavy television viewing only in early childhood, there was no consistent relation with behavioral or social skills outcomes. Having a television in the bedroom was associated with sleep problems and less emotional reactivity at 5.5 years but was not associated with social skills. CONCLUSIONS. Sustained exposure is a risk factor for behavioral problems, whereas early exposure that is subsequently reduced presents no additional risk. For social skills, concurrent exposure was more important than sustained or early exposure. Considering the timing of media exposure is vital for understanding the consequences of early experiences and informing prevention strategies.
TL;DR: In this article, a decoder extracts the URLs from the television signal, and supplies the URLs to a retrieval device which automatically retrieves corresponding web pages or other similar information over a network.
Abstract: Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) or other network information identifiers are transmitted with television signals in order to permit web content to be displayed in synchronization with television programming. In an illustrative embodiment, URLs are embedded in a closed caption portion of a transmitted television signal, and delimited from the closed caption text using predetermined delimiting characters. A decoder extracts the URLs from the television signal, and supplies the URLs to a retrieval device which automatically retrieves corresponding web pages or other similar information over a network. The retrieved web pages are then displayed to a viewer in synchronization with related programming in the television signal. The retrieval device may be a set-top box associated with a television set that displays both a retrieved web page and the corresponding television picture portion of the television signal. Alternatively, the retrieval device may be a computer which retrieves and displays a web page, while the corresponding television picture is displayed on a television set.
