Abstract: This Element focuses on English-Medium instruction (EMI), an educational approach that is spreading widely and rapidly in higher education institutions throughout the world because it is regarded as a lynchpin of the internationalisation process. The main aim of the Element is to provide critical insights into EMI implementation and the results obtained so far in diverse university contexts. After defining EMI and analysing the rapid extension it has experienced, the volume tackles issues such as stakeholders' views on how EMI programmes are being implemented, the impact of teaching and learning both content and language in a foreign language, translanguaging practices in English-medium lectures, and how assessment has hitherto been addressed. Each section aims to bring to light new avenues for research. The Element wraps up with a description of the many challenges ahead.

TL;DR: In this paper , the buckling behavior and loading capacity of CFS built-up section members subjected to axial compression were examined and the modifications of codified DSM equations were proposed for the CFS build-up open and closed section compressive members.
Abstract: The thorough test programme and numerical simulation were conducted to examine the buckling behaviour and loading capacity of cold-formed steel (CFS) built-up section members subjected to axial compression. In the test programme, the folded-flange channels of steel grades G500 and G550 were designed to assemble the novel built-up section compressive members. Two types of built-up sectional profiles were formed by composing channels with self-tapping screws. A total of twenty-two built-up section specimens with member lengths varied from 300 to 1500 mm were compressively loaded under pin-ended supports. The initial geometric imperfection measurements, test rig arrangement, loading procedure and test results were fully reported. In the numerical simulation, the extensive parametric study incorporating 224 CFS built-up section columns was performed to further generate numerical data covering a broad range of sectional configurations and geometric parameters. After that, the comparisons of loading capacities obtained from experiments and numerical simulation with nominal compressive strengths calculated on the basis of direct strength method (DSM) as stipulated in the Australian/New Zealand Standard and the North American Specification were conducted to assess the applicability of the current design rules for CFS built-up section members under compression. The results manifest that the codified DSM equations are generally conservative and fairly scattered to predict the resistances of the newly designed built-up section columns. The modifications of codified DSM equations are thus proposed in this study for the CFS built-up open and closed section compressive members. It is found that the modified DSM formulae reliably provide overall precise and less scattered strength predictions.

TL;DR: In this paper , a double C-section steel slit damper (DCSSD) was proposed, and the effect of strip aspect ratio, thickness of flange, damper length and steel grades on the hysteretic behavior and resistance of the DCSSD was investigated.
Abstract: Abstract In this research study, a novel double C-section steel slit damper (DCSSD) was proposed. Six cyclic loading tests of DCSSD specimens were carried out to study the effects of strip aspect ratio, thickness of flange, damper length and steel grades on the hysteretic behaviour and resistance of the DCSSD. Test results showed that the proposed DCSSD exhibited good structural performance in terms of initial stiffness, resistance, ductility and energy dissipation capability. The equivalent damping ratio of all DCSSD specimens exceeded 0.45 while that of the DCSSD using Q160 was over 0.50. Moreover, the cumulative displacement of the DCSSD using Q160 could approach 1500 mm. Subsequently, numerical models of test specimens were built to further investigate load transfer mechanism of the DCSSD. Good agreement was observed between the numerical simulations and the test results. The distribution of the moment and shear over the strips were extracted from the FE database, and the effectiveness of the long DCSSD was confirmed by the even moment and shear distribution profile. Finally, the accuracy of the available design equations of slit steel damper (SSD) documented in the literatures for predicting the initial stiffness and resistance of DCSSD was evaluated. In general, the design models produced inconsistent predictions of the initial stiffness of the test specimens. The existing design equations for predicting the ultimate strength of the DCSSDs were relatively conservative. • A novel brace-type long double C-section steel slit damper (DCSSD) was proposed and experimentally investigated. • Numerical study was conducted to enable further understanding of the test specimens. • The applicability of the current design models for steel slit dampers in predicting critical design parameters (e.g. stiffness and resistance) of the long DCSSDs was examined and discussed.

Temporary migration: category of analysis or category of practice?

14 Mar 2022-Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies
TL;DR: In this paper , a new analytical framework is proposed that brings together the role of policies defining migrants as temporary and the role that migrants own agency in perceiving their migration project as temporary or permanent.
Abstract: Temporariness has become an increasingly salient feature in international migration that presents itself as fragmented, non-linear, including different intermediate stops and multiple returns and new departures. This special issue proposes a new analytical framework that brings together the role of policies defining migrants as temporary and the role of migrant’s own agency in perceiving their migration project as temporary or permanent. The proposed analytical framework covers both low- and high-skilled, legal and irregular migratory flows, and different visa and citizenship regimes. This introduction starts by discussing the relationship between migration and time pointing to its multiple facets. The second section discusses temporary migration as a policy category looking at how it is regulated in more or less flexible regimes, including categories of temporary migrants that are not usually included in temporary migration debates, notably international students or working holiday makers. Section three turns to the lived experiences of migrants and the ways in which they conceptualise their migration (or their migration plans) as temporary or more long term, emphasising how these views can be also changing over time and through the actual migration experience. The final section brings the two strands together and presents the contents of this special issue.

Abstract: This chapter focuses on the strategic importance of agri-food value chains in West Africa to a sustainable recovery and making the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) operational. The first section gives an overview of regional integration into global value chains (GVCs). It shows how COVID-19 has impacted an economy that is not sufficiently embedded into upstream GVCs, although there are some stand-out industries, such as mining and quarries, and agri-food. The second section looks at the potential of agri-food value chains to capitalise on the region’s important agricultural resources and create quality jobs; and identifies constraints hindering their development. Finally, the third section sets out some strategic priorities for public policy to strengthen the region’s integration into agri-food value chains.

TL;DR: In this paper , the structural behavior of CFS face-to-face connected built-up closed cross-section columns is investigated and the influence of intermediate longitudinal connection spacing was observed in the failure modes and ultimate loading capacity.
Abstract: Structural behavior of Cold-formed Steel (CFS) face-to-face connected built-up closed cross-section columns is investigated in the present study. The CFS built-up columns are designed as long (L > 20r) and locally slender (λl > 1) to verify the influence of intermediate longitudinal connection spacing and check the appropriateness of the current AISI’s Direct Strength Method (DSM) design. A total of 31 axial compression tests were carried out with fixed–fixed end conditions, the design parameters such as local slenderness (λl), global slenderness (λc), intermediate longitudinal fastener spacing (a), and length of the column (L) are varied. The failure modes of the column are summarized and the reason for them is elucidated. The influence of intermediate longitudinal connection spacing was observed in the failure modes and ultimate loading capacity. The test results including ultimate load and failure modes were compared with the current direct strength method design predictions. As a preliminary work towards improving the current AISI design approach, a modified local slenderness (λlm) expression is suggested to consider the influence of intermediate longitudinal fastener spacing in the design strength of cold-formed steel built-up closed cross-section columns.
