Abstract: The applicant had been arrested in 1997 on suspicion of carrying out a number of armed robberies on mini-cab drivers. He agreed to participate in identification parades but failed to attend on the day on which they were due to take place. Instead he sent a doctor’s note stating that he was too ill to go to work. The parades were rearranged and notice to that effect was sent to the applicant’s home address. The applicant did not attend the rearranged parade, stating that he had not received notification as he had changed address. A further robbery then occurred for which the applicant was arrested. The applicant again agreed to stand on an identification parade, but again failed to attend on the day that it was to take place. Following this failure to attend two more robberies were committed with which the applicant was subsequently charged. The mainstay of the prosecution’s case against the applicant would be the ability of a number of witnesses to make visual identifications and for this reason submitting the applicant to an identification parade was of great importance. In light of the applicant’s failure to attend the parades that had been arranged, the police decided to arrange a video identification. Permission to film the applicant covertly for this purpose was sought from the Deputy Chief Constable under Home Office guidelines. The applicant was taken from prison, where he was being detained in relation to another matter, to a police station. Both the applicant and the prison authorities had been informed that this was for identification purposes and further interviews regarding the armed robberies. On arrival at the police station he was invited to participate in an identification parade but refused. The custody suite at the police station was fitted with a camera which was kept running at all times and covered an area in which police officers and other suspects came and went. Before the applicant arrived at the police station an engineer made adjustments to the camera to ensure that clear images were obtained that were suitable for use in a video identification. The footage of the applicant was then used in a compilation with footage of 11 other volunteers who imitated the actions of the applicant. Two of the witnesses who viewed the video compilation picked out the applicant. Neither the applicant nor his solicitor were informed that a tape had been made or used for identification purposes and were, therefore, not given an opportunity to view it prior to its use.

Abstract: A radio base station is disclosed to communicate with a user terminal that is capable of using a licensed band and an unlicensed band and has a control section that controls the transmission of downlink signals in the unlicensed band using LBT (Listen Before Talk), a selection section that selects the symbol to execute LBT, randomly, with equal probability, from a plurality of candidate symbols, and an acquiring section that acquires a measurement result, in which the received signal intensity in the LBT period is measured, wherein when the control section judges that the channel of the unlicensed band is in an idle state from the measurement result of received signal intensity, the control section executes control so that a beacon reference signal is transmitted in all of the candidate symbols that follow the symbol in which LBT was executed.

Abstract: Scholarly documents are usually composed of sections, each of which serves a different purpose by conveying specific context. The ability to automatically identify sections would allow us to understand the semantics of what is different in different sections of documents, such as what was in the introduction, methodologies used, experimental types, trends, etc. We propose a set of hybrid algorithms to 1) automatically identify section boundaries, 2) recognize standard sections, and 3) build a hierarchy of sections. Our algorithms achieve an F-measure of 92.38% in section boundary detection, 96% accuracy (average) on standard section recognition, and 95.51% in accuracy in the section positioning task.

Abstract: Genre analysis is one of the common ways to analyse the rhetorical structure of a text. Previously, there aremany genre analysis and rhetorical organisation studies on research articles (RAs) from different disciplines.Some of them focused on the whole RAs and some of them focused on certain sections of the RAs. This studyattempts to identify the moves in the Method section of the Engineering RAs, and the most frequent verbs in themoves. The present study adopts a corpus-based analysis; 60 RAs from an Engineering discipline were retrievedfrom the Scopus websites. The Method section framework from Huang (2014) was adopted for the analysis. Thefindings suggest that there are crucial moves in the Method section of the Engineering RAs, which need to beadopted by the writers to enhance not only their discourse competency, but also to meet the readers’ expectationof the text readability.

Abstract: This paper is an attempt to account for the number and frequency of individual characters in the Gothic corpus. The first section explains the foundation of this statistical study, i.e. the text used and the number of characters in the main text of individual Gothic documents. The second section contains a more detailed study of all the characters in the Gothic manuscripts, and in a subsection an attempt is made to extend this study to phonemes (or principal speech sounds). The third section treats the numerals and the fourth concludes. All numbers occurring in the Gothic corpus are listed in the Appendix.
