TL;DR: A content analysis of the education section of the iTunes App Store seeks to provide an up-to-date, reliable and unbiased analysis, and to act as a benchmark for change as the iTunes app store continues to grow and evolve.
Abstract: The mission of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop is to harness digital media technologies to advance children's learning. The Center supports action research, encourages partnerships to connect child development experts and educators with interactive media and technology leaders, and mobilizes public and private investment in promising and proven new media technologies for children. The Joan Ganz Cooney Center has a deep commitment toward dissemination of useful and timely research. Working closely with our Cooney Fellows, national advisors, media scholars, and practitioners, the Center publishes industry, policy, and research briefs examining key issues in the field of digital media and learning. No part of this publication may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopy, or any information storage and retrieval system, without permission from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop. ABSTRACT With over 1 billion Apps downloaded from Apple's App Store, and major children's entertainment companies diving into this market en masse, it is important to consider the role that Apps may play in children's learning. While numerous mainstream news and industry sources have started to provide anecdotal descriptions of what is available for children in the iTunes App store, none have done a careful analysis with a focus on educational content. This short paper is a content analysis of the education section of the iTunes App Store. It seeks to provide an up-to-date, reliable and unbiased analysis, and to act as a benchmark for change as the iTunes App store continues to grow and evolve.

The Fate of Expertise after WIKIPEDIA

Larry Sanger
01 Feb 2009-Episteme
TL;DR: The authors argues that Wikipedia articles suffer because so many aggressive people drive off people more knowledgeable than they are; so there is no reason to think that Wikipedia’s articles will continually improve.
Abstract: Wikipedia has challenged traditional notions about the roles of experts in the Internet Age. Section 1 sets up a paradox. Wikipedia is a striking popular success, and yet its success can be attributed to the fact that it is wide open and bottom-up. How can such a successful knowledge project disdain expertise? Section 2 discusses the thesis that if Wikipedia could be shown by an excellent survey of experts to be fantastically reliable, then experts would not need to be granted positions of special authority. But, among other problems, this thesis is self-stultifying. Section 3 explores a couple ways in which egalitarian online communities might challenge the occupational roles or the epistemic leadership roles of experts. There is little support for the notion that the distinctive occupations that require expertise are being undermined. It is also implausible that Wikipedia and its like might take over the epistemic leadership roles of experts. Section 4 argues that a main reason that Wikipedia’s articles are as good as they are is that they are edited by knowledgeable people to whom deference is paid, although voluntarily. But some Wikipedia articles suffer because so many aggressive people drive off people more knowledgeable than they are; so there is no reason to think that Wikipedia’s articles will continually improve. Moreover, Wikipedia’s commitment to anonymity further drives off good contributors. Generally, some decisionmaking role for experts is not just consistent with online knowledge communities being open and bottom-up, it is recommended as well.

Fundamentals of Private Pensions

[...]

26 Nov 2009
TL;DR: Fundamentals of Private Pensions is a comprehensive text and reference book on retirement plans in the US, covering recent developments and organized into eight main sections.
Abstract: Abstract For more than five decades, Fundamentals of Private Pensions has been the most authoritative text and reference book on retirement plans in the United States. The ninth edition is completely updated and reflects recent developments in retirement plans including the passage of the US Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA), the widespread shift toward hybrid and defined contribution plans, and a burgeoning economics and finance research literature on retirement and retirement plans. The volume is organized into eight main sections so the reader may use the volume as a text, a research tool, or a general reference. Section I (Chapter 1) introduces the historical evolution of the pension movement and the underlying forces that shaped its progress. Section II (Chapters 2 and 3) explains how employer-provided pensions fit into the patchwork of the U.S. retirement income security system, especially Social Security. The section also includes a discussion of the economics of tax incentives and their effect on retirement plan offerings and the structure of the benefits provided. Section III (Chapters 4 through 9) lays out the economic role of retirement plans--their design, workforce incentives, plan finances, production of adequate retirement income, possibilities for phased retirement, and the risk of outliving pension assets. Section IV (Chapters 10 through 13) examines the various forms of defined benefit and defined contribution plans, including hybrid plans, in terms of their structure, requirements, and operations. Section V (Chapters 14 through 20) lays out the regulatory environment in which plans operate; this extensive material has been especially updated to reflect PPA, and the reams of associated guidance and implementing regulations. Section VI (Chapters 21 through 25) explores the funding and accounting rules under which private defined benefit plans operate; this section also reflects the new PPA rules. The penultimate section (Chapters 26 through 28) includes a complete revamping of chapters on risk management and investments applicable to retirement plans. The section describes modern portfolio theory and its broad implications for retirement investing, and in two separate chapters, specific implications for defined benefit and defined contribution plans. The final section (Chapter 29) concludes the text with a discussion of the future of retirement plans in the United States and around the world--a particularly timely subject in light of the extreme financial volatility experienced in 2008 and the pending retirement of the baby boom generation.

Abstract: Abstract This article examines the arguments concerning enhancement of human persons recently presented by Michael Sandel. In the first section, I briefly describe some of his arguments. In Section II, I consider whether, as Sandel claims, the desire for mastery motivates enhancement and whether such a desire could be grounds for its impermissibility. Section III considers how Sandel draws the distinction between treatment and enhancement, and the relation to nature that he thinks each expresses.

Abstract: With the rapid and intense increase in digital literacy, technical communication is, by many accounts, in the midst of a seismic shift (Hayhoe, 2003; Boiko, 2007; Spinuzzi, 2007) As recently as 25 years ago, most technical communicators were men who, according to Hayhoe, called themselves “technical writers or editors” Most documents were written in long hand on 8½" x 11" pads or typed on manual typewriters Those documents often described hardware (eg, airplanes, electronics, machinery, computers) or, in a few rare cases, computer software Most of the documents were written with the assumption that their audience consisted of technologically savvy users so that the product could be described but its use did not have to be explained Manuals, for example, often included a chapter or section on the theory of the device’s operation

TL;DR: In this paper, an area setting section detects a photographic subject based on a photographic image captured by the imaging section for every photographing in the continuous photographing, and sets the size and position of the photographic subject area including the detected photographic subject.
Abstract: A photography mode selecting section allows a photographer to select continuous photographing. An imaging section captures an image of a subject. An area setting section detects a photographic subject based on a photographic image captured by the imaging section for every photographing in the continuous photographing, and sets the size and position of a photographic subject area including the detected photographic subject, when the continuous photographing is selected by the photography mode selecting section. A memory section stores an image inside the photographic subject area as a photographic subject image. Consequently, in continuous photographing of a moving body, the size of the photographic subject area for every photographing in the continuous photographing can be changed according to change in the size of the image of the moving body with respect to an image screen of the imaging section, thereby preventing wasteful usage of a memory area of the memory section.
