Calculativeness, Trust, and Economic Organization

TL;DR: Calculative economic reasoning defines and delimits the elusive notion of trust.
Abstract: Abstract My main purpose in this article is to explicate what Diego Gambetta has referred to as ‘the elusive notion of trust.’ As the literature on trust reveals, and as developed here, ‘trust’ is a term with many meanings. The relentless application of calculative economic reasoning is the principal device that I employ to define and delimit the elusive notion of trust. The calculative approach to economic organization is sketched in Section I. The concept of ‘calculative trust,’ which enjoys widespread and growing acceptance but with which I take exception, is examined in Section II. Societal trust, which works through the institutional environment and takes a series of hyphenated forms, is briefly treated in Section III. Nearly noncalculative uses of trust of a personal kind are developed in Section IV. Concluding remarks follow in Section V.

The Irish Book in English 1550-1800

[...]

2 Feb 2006
TL;DR: The Irish Book in English 1550-1800 explores the development of the book in Ireland from the 16th to the 18th century. It covers print culture, structure and innovation, collections and reading practices, and the impact of print on religious, political, literary, scientific and historical spheres.
Abstract: Abstract The Oxford History of the Irish Book is a major new series that charts the development of the book in Ireland from its origins within an early medieval manuscript culture to its current incarnation alongside the rise of digital media in the twenty-first century. Volume III: The Irish Book in English, 1550-1800 contains a series of groundbreaking essays that seek to explain the fortunes of printed word from the early Renaissance to the end of the eighteenth century. The essays in section one explain the development of print culture in the period, from its first incarnation in the small area of the English Pale around Dublin, dominated by the interests of the English authorities, to the more widespread dispersal of the printing press at the close of the eighteenth century, when provincial presses developed their own character and style either alongside or as a challenge to the dominant intellectual culture. Section two explains the crucial developments in the structure and technical innovation of the print trade; the role played by private and public collections of books; and the evidence of changing reading practices throughout the period. The third and longest section explores the impact of the rise of print. Essays examine the effect that the printed book had on religious and political life in Ireland, providing a case study of the impact of the French Revolution on pamphlets and propaganda in Ireland; the transformations illustrated in the history of historical writing, as well as in literature and the theatre, through the publication of play texts for a wide audience. Others explore the impact that print had on the history of science and the production of foreign language books. The volume concludes with an authoritative bibliographical essay outlining the sources that exist for the study of the book in early modern Ireland. This is an authoritative volume with essays by key scholars that will be the standard guide for many years to come.

Drug-Induced Diseases: Prevention, Detection, and Management

[...]

Kevin A. Clauson
15 Dec 2006-The American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education
TL;DR: In its second edition, this essential and comprehensive resource provides a detailed analysis of how to identify, prevent, and manage drug-induced diseases.
Abstract: The editors of Drug-Induced Diseases: Prevention, Detection, and Management begin by defining drug-induced disease (DID) as, “an unintended effect of a drug that may result in morbidity or mortality with symptoms sufficient to prompt a patient to seek medial attention and/or require hospitalization.” They proceed to explore these effects via the 12 major sections of the text. Section 1 provides an overview on the impact of DID on the health care system, including contributing factors and postmarketing surveillance. Sections 2-11 are focused on specific categories of diseases/organ systems (eg, neurological, psychiatric, gastrointestinal, etc). Section 12 is a miscellaneous category that includes teratogenicity. Each Section is further subdivided into chapters according to specific types of diseases. Over 80 content experts contributed to the 53 chapters that comprise the book. Each chapter centers on a comprehensive, referenced table of causative agents. Those tables are tailored to the specific disease and may contain additional information such as incidence, prevalence, mechanism, severity, and notes/comments. The tables include prescription and nonprescription drugs, illicit/recreational drugs, and in some cases, dietary supplements such as herbal products that have been implicated as causative agents. The rest of the chapter typically features the relevant information dealing with epidemiology, presentation, risk factors, and morbidity and mortality. The most clinically useful highlights of each chapter provide key elements of both prevention and management for dealing with drug-induced diseases and their deleterious effects. Each chapter also closes with baseline information to communicate to patients, followed by a reference section. The text and primary table (of causative agents) is supplemented by a number of other figures and tables. These are chiefly in support of the text and include clearly presented lists of monitoring parameters, manifestations, and other considerations. An appendix included in the book is comprised of an alphabetical listing of drugs by generic name with the disease(s) that each may induce along with the corresponding chapter number(s). This helps to offset an index that might benefit from additional entries. Perhaps future editions could be even better with a few additions. An appendix or table compiling all of the dietary supplements or herbal causative agents might prove useful for clinical practice and as a reference. If the scope permitted, a short chapter in the Miscellaneous Section of the book on related drug-induced nutrient depletion would also be welcome. Finally, given the high degree of utility of this information, a version that could be accessed on a personal digital assistant (PDA) would be desirable. Overall, the book is very well organized and the consistent use of subheadings throughout the chapters really aids in navigating the book efficiently. The information is presented clearly and includes a wide range of topics. There are some instances in which a little more depth of information would be useful, but the editors largely accomplish the objective of providing the first book on drug-induced diseases of such magnitude while maintaining clarity and ease of use.

Adjective Ordering RestrictionsRevisited

1 Jan 2006
TL;DR: These two exception classes suggest that AOR are subject to the semantic constraint in (2), which is not the best solution as suggested by a new set of data coming from so-called non-definite superlatives.
Abstract: The paper is organized as follows: I start with some background on AOR (section 2) and then present Cinque(1994)’s syntactic analysis of the phenomenon (section 3). Next, I discuss a class of exceptions that hasn’t received much attention in the literature on ordering restrictions, namely intensional operator adjectives like former and alleged (section 4). These adjectives prove to raise challenges to the syntactic account of AOR, and section 5 shows how it can be modified so as to accommodate them. The modification, however, is not the best solution as suggested by a new set of data coming from so-called non-definite superlatives. Section 6 shows that sequences of adjectives that normally obey ordering constraints, are freely ordered when they contain a superlative and are preceded by the indefinite determiner. Taken together these two exception classes suggest that AOR are subject to the semantic constraint in (2). A discussion on how to implement this constraint and the consequences of the proposal follows (section 7). Section 8 discusses definite superlatives and section 9 concludes.
