Abstract: Parts of documents are retrieved using the entire context of selected documents. Classification unit designation section performs the designation of a classification unit. A logical structure analysis section analyzes the logical structure of the documents read-in from a document storing section where the documents are stored. A fundamental vector generation section partitions the logical structure of the documents by means of the classification unit, extracts keywords, and generates fundamental vectors. A heading vector generation section extracts key words from the headings of the structural elements that are arranged in higher level of structure than the structural element of the classification unit that was the target of fundamental vector generation, and generates heading vectors. A vector synthesis section synthesizes fundamental vectors and heading vectors, and generates composite vectors. Composite vector maintenance section attaches the corresponding composite vectors to structural elements of the classification unit that were the target of composite vector generation and maintains the attached objects. A classification section classifies the structural elements of the documents of the classification unit based on the degree of similarity of the generated composite vectors. A display section displays the results of classification.

Abstract: Abstract The many states of the ancient greek world were governed by small councils and assemblies of adult male citizens. The decisions of these bodies took the form of decrees. This book collects the evidence for decrees, many of which were inscribed on stone or metal, or appear in literary texts - either directly quoted, or indirectly reported. This evidence is used by Professor Rhodes, with Professor Lewis, to study the decision-making procedures of the Greek states, and the extent to which the citizens were actively involved in those procedures from the sixth century BC to the fourth century AD. An introductory section on Athens shows what questions can be asked and what answers can be given when there is a good supply of epigraphic material and literary texts. This is followed by the catalogue, systematically chronicling the usage of individual states throughout the Greek world with brief discussions of the interesting features in each case. The final section disusses the language of the decrees and the working of the political machinery that they reveal.

One natural topic (which I look at in the following section) concerns the lexical items that are available for referring to sexual orientations and to people of various orientations. A second topic which I look at in the following section concerns differences in the language and speech of people of different orientations.

The waiting sections are provided for temporarily holding an object before the convey mechanism conveys an object to the interface section.

Abstract: A topic storage section organizes the addresses for an information providing sources entered from a topic managing section, the pointers to information acquisition drivers stored in an information acquisition driver storage section, and the pointers to search conditions stored in a search condition storage section into groups. The topic storage section then stores such groups by each of the topics classified hierarchically. Then, an information selecting section acquires information from the information providing source for the topic stored in the topic storage section by means of the information acquisition driver corresponding to the information providing source. Thereafter, the information selecting section compares each of the acquired pieces of information with the search condition for the topic stored in the topic storage section and chooses only the pieces of information that conform to the search condition.

Abstract: An image input section enters a document image including a bar code, and converts the document image into a binary image. An image memory section memorizes the binary image supplied from the image input section. A mask judging section performs a scanning operation using an M×M pixel window for detecting an alternate pattern from the binary image supplied from the image input section. A small pattern removing section removes small patterns from a binary image sent from the mask judging section. An expanding section expands a pattern involved in a binary image by an amount equivalent to k1 pixels when this binary image is sent from the small pattern removing section. A contracting section contracts a pattern involved in a binary image by an amount equivalent to k2 pixels when this binary image is sent from the expanding section. A region detecting section obtains the feature quantity of each pattern involved in a binary image sent from the contracting section, and detects a bar code candidate region based on the detected feature quantity. And, a decoding section decodes a detected bar code by reading a specific image region from the image memory section when the specific image region corresponds to the bar code candidate region detected by the region detecting section.

Abstract: This article on using cooperative learning in mathematics is divided into four sections. Section 1 deals with the importance of problem solving and how cooperative learning can play an important role in helping students solve problems. Section 2 emphasizes the importance of communicating mathematical concepts through reading, writing, and discussing. Section 3 gives specific suggestions for implementing cooperative learning in the classroom. Finally, Section 4 presents a classroom example of students working together using reading and writing to solve mathematical word problems.

Abstract: A method of storing, in memory, table data. The table data has a packet ID (PID), a Table ID, and a Current/Next Indicator, a section number, and a version number. The first step in the method is specifying the PID ID, the Table ID, and the Current/Next Indicator. The next step is initializing the section number in a table section header to filter to ‘0’. Then, each table section is checked as received to determine if the table section is the last table section for the table. This is indicated in the table section header. If this is the last table section of the table the version number field is incremented, and the section number field is set to ‘0’. If, however, the section is not the last section, the section number is incremented, the next section of the table is incremented, and the next section of the table is stored in memory.

Abstract: A power supply circuit for a video display appliance capable of reducing even the unnecessary power consumption caused by a power factor correction circuit when a display control for power saving is performed. The power supply circuit includes a rectifying section, a power factor correction section, an SMPS, a control section for determining whether to perform a display control for power saving of the video display appliance to provide a control signal, and a switching section for controlling the operation of the power factor correction section according to the control signal provided from the control section.

Abstract: Plural types of fixed format data for printing on a label tape are previously stored in a ROM in a label printer. The label printer displays a menu for selecting a fixed format on a display section. A user operates a key input section to select a fixed format and then input character data. The input character data is printed on a label tape in accordance with a format based on selected fixed format data. Therefore, the printing apparatus can easily input data and prepare elaborate label tapes.

Abstract: A recorder which is provided with a tuner section, a storing section for storing the timer information on the broadcast reception starting and ending time of the tuner section, a timer section, a recording section which records the output signal of the tuner section on a recording medium taken out from a stocking section for stocking a plurality of recording media, and a controller which controls the operations of the tuner section and the recording section based on the output signal of the timer section and timer information stored in the storing section. The controller compares the output signal of the timer section with the broadcast reception starting time contained in the timer information stored in the storing section, takes out one recording medium from the stocking section based on the result of the comparison, starts the recording section to record the output signal of the tuner section on the taken out recording medium, and stops the recording section while the section records the output signal of the tuner section on the recording medium based on the result of comparison between the output signal of the timer section and the broadcast reception ending time contained in the timer information stored in the storing section.

Abstract: There is disclosed a portable communication device comprising a storage section for managing a plurality of personal numbers and information regarding a plurality of individuals on a personal basis, whereby a plurality of users can use the device in a mode set according to each of the users. The portable communication device (portable telephone set) comprises an antenna section 1, a radio section 2, a voice processing section 3, a microphone section 4, a speaker section 5, a central control unit 6, an operation section 7, a display section 8 and a data processing section 9. The central control unit 6 controls the radio section 2, the voice processing section 3, the operation section 7, the display section 8 and the data processing section 9. The central control unit 6 includes a user retrieving section 11. By inputting a password from the operation section 7, a switch is made to a personal mode. Accordingly, a personal number (PSID) for each user can be transmitted/received and data can be managed on a personal basis.

Abstract: In this paper, we outline a method that teaches students how to study research literature. The method aids in developing a student's confidence by posing a simple set of steps with questions. The method has been used successfully for developing literature skills with high-school, undergraduate and graduate students in U.S. engineering curriculum. The method, which has the Japanese name, KENSHU, was developed by modifying a system used at a top Japanese national university. KENSHU is Japanese for research understanding. The basic steps of KENSHU are: (i) take a recent foreign (English) scientific article and divide it into sections, (ii) read and discuss a single section with a more experienced classmate, (iii) translate the section, (iv) continue step iii until all sections are finished, (iv) prepare a one page summary of the article with key graphs and tables, and (v) present the findings of the article at a miniconference. In this work, we have put into words, the aspects of reading a scientific article that incorporates the KENSHU framework. We applied the method to U.S. university juniors and seniors, graduate students as well as junior and senior high-school students. We conclude that the method is effective for not only learning how to read scientific articles, but also for learning how to write scientific articles.

Papers in this section may reactto specific pieces appearing in recent issues of the journal, or they may addressmethodological, theoretical, educational, or professional concerns. Manu-scripts to be considered for this section should conform to the establishededitorial guidelines for the journal and not exceed 15 pages in length. Manu-scripts should be submitted to the editor of the journal for processing, andauthors should clearly indicate in a cover letter that the submission is for theCommentary section. The submission and subsequent correspondence willthen be handled by the associate editor in charge of the section. Ideas andsuggestions for topics are welcomed.

Abstract: Abstract Charles Taylor’s chapter has two main sections: an account of the modern “context” of nationalist movements, drawing on the work of Gellner and Anderson, and then an account of the “sources” of nationalism, applying Taylor’s own earlier work on the idea of”a politics of recognition:’ I found the first section to be insightful and helpful, but I’m puzzled about the second section and, indeed, about the distinction between the “context” and “sources” of nationalism.

The appendixes contain sections on Sandia’s preferred style, usage, and grammar; equations; report references; and trademarks and copyrights.
