6 Jan 1994
TL;DR: Introduction to Logic and to the Methodology of the Deductive Sciences introduces logic and its applications in mathematics and mathematical theory building.
Abstract: Abstract Now in its fourth edition, this classic work clearly and concisely introduces the subject of logic and its applications. The first part of the book explains the basic concepts and principles which make up the elements of logic. The author demonstrates that these ideas are found in all branches of mathematics, and that logical laws are constantly applied in mathematical reasoning. The second part of the book shows the applications of logic in mathematical theory building with concrete examples that draw upon the concepts and principles presented in the first section. Numerous exercises and an introduction to the theory of real numbers are also presented. Students, teachers and general readers interested in logic and mathematics will find this book to be an invaluable introduction to the subject.

Abstract: A method for producing computer processed animation includes a work station composed of a computer and peripheral equipment which produces a graphic movement sequence for a cartoon figure, by compiling a recording of measured data from strategic parts of an actor, and storing in a memory information concerning the figure to be animated. The figure is divided into a plurality of sections which are movable in relation to one another. Prior to figure compilation for producing an image of the figure, the measured data recording for each section is obtained in the form of a space angle. Prior to compiling each section, a grouping of a predetermined number of perspective drawings is stored, in digitized form, in a respective area of the memory, each grouping in a plurality of mutually different space angle positions. A memory area of interest representing a perspective drawing of one of the sections can be addressed with the aid of information relating to the space angle obtained from the measured data recording for the section concerned. The figure is compiled in the compilation image in accordance with a predetermined sequential compilation schedule, section after section, where each subsequent section is added to the nearest proceeding section at a joint location, to build the sections.

TL;DR: The status of teaching as an occupation and teacher development in the United States has been discussed in detail in this paper, with a focus on teacher recruitment and current and future demand for teachers, as well as the possibilities for transforming teaching and developing new paradigms for school reform.
Abstract: This paper offers an overview and analysis of the status of teaching as an occupation and of teacher development in the United States. An opening section describes the development of the industrial-based education model that has been in place for this century and the reform movements that have started in the past two decades. A section on the demands of these reforms notes that the rhetoric of school improvement has changed from a language of school reform to a language of school restructuring, as signs of dysfunction in the education system have joined with new social demands for greater education. This section also discusses teacher recruitment and current and future demand for teachers. A section on the status of teaching and teacher development notes that this is a critical moment for transforming the capacity of American teaching by transforming the quality of their preparation as fully half of teachers working in 2005 will be hired in the 1990s. This section discusser efforts and obstacles to improve teacher preparation and professional development. A following section describes teaching and teacher development abroad. Final sections discuss the possibilities for transforming teaching and developing new paradigms for school reform. Contains 77 references. TL;DR: In this article, a memory device includes a redundant data-storage section as a spare for a normal data storage section so that redundant data holding circuitry repairs a defective area in normal data-holding circuitry.
Abstract: A memory device includes a redundant data-storage section as a spare for a normal data-storage section so that redundant data-holding circuitry repairs a defective area in normal data-holding circuitry. Data to be written is temporarily stored into a data holding section, and the data thus stored is written into the normal data-storage section and then it is read out immediately after the write operation. If the readout data is different from the initially written data, the destination of the write operation is switched to the redundant data-storage section so that the data held in the data holding section is written into the redundant data-storage section. If there is no discrepancy between these data, the destination of the write operation is then switched to the normal data-storage section so that the data held in the data holding section is written into the normal data-storage section.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to prevent recurrence of counterfeiting by enhancing the inspection of the image forming apparatus and giving a warning to the counterfeiter, since it is understood that a counterfeiter knew a specific ID number.
Abstract: An image forming apparatus stores an ID number input through an auditor in a memory section when a paper money judging section judges that image data obtained from an image reading section is the image data of paper money. With this structure, the fact that an attempt to perform counterfeiting was made is known by reading out the ID number stored in the memory section. In this case, since it is understood that a counterfeiter knew a specific ID number, the counterfeiter can be detected from a limited number of people. It is thus possible to take some measures to prevent recurrence of counterfeiting by, for example, enhancing the inspection of the image forming apparatus and giving a warning to the counterfeiter.

TL;DR: In this paper, Endress identified, published, and assigned to the same translator some of the short pieces attributed in various Arabic manuscripts to Alexander of Aphrodisias in fact derive from Proclus's Elements of Theology.
Abstract: Some of the short pieces attributed in various Arabic manuscripts to Alexander of Aphrodisias in fact derive from Proclus's Elements of Theology. Twenty such pieces were published in 1973 by G. Endress, who traced the unnamed translator to the circle of Kindi. Another such piece is here identified, published, and assigned to the same translator. Its beginning and end seem to have been revised by a later transmitter. Section II of the article adduces a parallel case where the original Arabic version still exists. Section III surveys a number of related pieces that would also appear to have been changed in transmission. Section IV argues that most if not all were once united in a single collection of Proclus and Alexander. Section V argues that since certain changes of detail were evidently made during or soon after translation, the general arrangement of the Kindi-circle Alexander, as of the Kindi-circle Liber de Causis and the Kindi-circle “Theology of Aristotle”, is also likely to be peculiar to the Arabic tradition. The text from which Proclus Arabus was first translated need not have differed substantially from the transmitted Greek.

Abstract: This table of random numbers consists of a sequence of 32,768 random digits (integers 0 through 9), generated using SAS-PC Release 6.04. It is presented as an octal table with eight pages of eight columns and eight rows, divided into blocks that themselves consist of eight columns and eight rows of digib. Random number tables are commonly organized in groups of 10 with instructions for use that include a nonrandom component Use of this table of randotn numbers to select a sample of size k includes the selection of a random starting point and a rule for proceeding from that point to selecting the k sample elements. The first step is to list or number all K elements in the available populadon from which the sample of size ¿ is to be taken. The lowest integer power of 10 that produces a number at least as large as k is then identified. This integer will be the length (in digits) of the random number to be selected, as shown in the following table:

TL;DR: Higher order logic is a foundational subject with practical applications in Theoretical Computer Science. It is characterized by its expressive power and is increasingly recognized for its importance.
Abstract: Abstract Higher order logics, long considered by many to be an esoteric subject, are increasingly recognized for their foundational importance and practical usefulness, notably in Theoretical Computer Science. In this chapter we try to present a survey of some issues and results, without any pretense of completeness. Our choice of topics is driven by an attempt to cover the foundational aspects of higher order logic, and also to briefly point to some areas of current and potential applications. The chapter falls into two parts. The first part, consisting of sections 1 through 4, is designed to bring forth the essential issues and facts of the topic. Section 1 is intended to motivate our interest in higher order logic, by presenting selected examples of the expressive power of second order logic, and contrasting them with the limitations of first order logic.

TL;DR: In this article, a speech section detecting device 3 has a control section 10 and a storage section 20 such as a memory, where the control section detects whether a speech signal is voice or voiceless.
Abstract: PURPOSE: To detect a speech section without lacking a word head even if utterance is performed with timing at which a switch is not yet pressed by extracting only one speech section from a stored input speech signal. CONSTITUTION: A speech section detecting device 3 has a control section 10 and a storage section 20 such as a memory. And the control section 10 always discriminates whether it is voice or voiceless for a speech signal made a digital signal by an A/D converter from a microphone, on the other hand, only one speech section is extracted from a speech signal stored in the memory part 20 in a wider range than a detection range specified by switch operation of a section specifying switch and outputted. Also, the memory part 20 always preserves an input speech signal of some fixed time. Therefore, a speech section can be detected without lacking a word head even if utterance is performed with timing at which a switch is not yet pressed.
