TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the circumstances in which early Greek elegy was performed and argue that for our extant shorter poems only performance at symposia is securely attested.
Abstract: This paper is chiefly concerned with the circumstances in which early Greek elegy was performed. Section II argues that for our extant shorter poems only performance at symposia is securely attested. Section III examines the related questions of the meaning of elegos and the performance of elegies at funerals. Finally (IV) I try to establish the existence of longer elegiac poems intended for performance at public festivals.

TL;DR: The Mirabilis Liber as discussed by the authors is a collection of prophecies supporting the expectation of a French World Emperor and an Angelic Pope, which was the first substantial prophetic text of any kind to interest a French printer.
Abstract: HE Mirabilis Liber was the first prophetic compilation to be printed in France and, indeed, one of the first substantial prophetic texts of any kind to interest a French printer. Although its printing history demonstrates its popularity with readers, it was not aimed at the most popular of markets. The greater part is in Latin, and the shorter French section is alleged to have been left in French only because of its obscurity. The work offers a remarkable collection of major prophetic texts, together with a number of new prophecies and related material. There has been comparatively little research on the book as a whole. Francois Secret has made valuable contributions to the study of certain items and both he and Marjorie Reeves have discussed the sense of the work, which is a collection of prophecies supporting the expectation of a French World Emperor and an Angelic Pope.1 The present article discusses the intentions of the compiler and his reception by his readers; two appendices provide (A) a repertory of the contents of the work, with indication of the sources where possible; (B) a list of the editions of the book and an account of its publishing history.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to enable high-speed extraction of character string by dividing picture elements of reading area of a document into specified number of small areas and providing a picture compressing device, a characteristic extracting device, an area detecting device and a character string detecting device.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable high-speed extraction of character string by dividing picture elements of reading area of a document into specified number of small areas and providing a picture compressing device, a characteristic extracting device, an area detecting device and a character string detecting device. CONSTITUTION:A read picture of a document stored in an image information storing section 12 is divided into small areas of specified number of units. In the small areas, pictures continuing at specified intervals is extracted by a compressed picture processing section 15. Areas in which a picture is connected at a specified distance or more is detected by an area detecting section 16. The detection and extraction of character string pictures are made in a character string detecting section 17 from the shape of the area detected by the detecting section 16 and information of picture element characteristic picture that indicates the presence of a lateral straight line, and supplied to a character recognizing section 19. Thus, each character in the character string picture is cut out and recognized in the recognizing section 19. By compressing the read picture first and detecting a character area by using the compressed picture, the character string contained in a document can be extracted at high speed.

Then the keyword candidate extracted by the extracting section 2 is sorted and displayed on a display section 4, the user uses the input section 1 to select the keyword candidate. Then a document or a keyword candidate being an object of keyword extraction is selected, and when an inadequate candidate is thrown away. If the candidate has an excess word, it is deleted and words to be separated are separated from the candidate. The result thus formed is commanded to be designated to store the keyword altogether in storing the document. Further, the document is retrieved from the keyword, and the keyword is extracted simply without inputting the keyword from the user.

TL;DR: In this article, the food crisis is viewed as an income and productivity crisis, rather than food shortages per se, and a formulation is introduced that describes three stages of disinvestment among affected people, stages that have been observed historically as a result of drought and famine.
Abstract: This paper on the African food crisis is presented in four parts. The first section focuses on the current nexus of problems that has created an endemic economic crisis in many African countries, the background against which both the drought and certain domestic policies have operated. The second part introduces the concept of entitlement, a concept that is used to understand better the human response to a diminished ability to produce or purchase food. This section looks at the food crisis as an income and productivity crisis, rather than food shortages per se. In the third section, a formulation is introduced that describes three stages of disinvestment among affected people, stages that have been observed historically as a result 'of drought and famine. The last section examines possible solutions and the most appropriate national and international response to the various stages described.
