Abstract: PURPOSE:To shorten processing time and to improve a recognition rate by recognizing rubies given to characters in a sentence and finding out the character recognizing result of the sentence. CONSTITUTION:A controller 10 transfers a document image fetched by a scanner 16 to a recognizing part 18, which extracts a character pattern from an image in a character area and judges whether the character is a ruby character or not based upon the size and position of the character. When the character pattern is a ruby character, the recognizing part 18 executes the character recognizing processing of the ruby character and judges a corresponding character based upon information indicating the character positions of the sentence and the character position of the ruby character for instance. The recognizing part 18 narrows down the character sort of the corresponding sentence from the recognition result of the ruby character and executes the recognizing processing of only the restricted character sort to be recognized out of characters to which rubies are given. Thereby characters to be recognized are restricted, time necessary for processing can be shortened and the recognition rate can be improved.

In a document generating apparatus, a storage portion stores information on a layout of a document as document layout data, a unification judging portion reads the document layout data stored in the storage portion, and a ruby character setting portion judges unification of a layout of the whole document based on the read document layout data to set a display form of a ruby character based on a judgment result by the unification judging portion.
