Abstract: This paper attempts to identify and adjust for several shortcomings of previous port impact studies in the estimation of primary port economic impact. These shortcomings are found to create the potential for both positive and negative bias. Also presented in this paper is a technique for circumventing several practical problems in the estimation of secondary economic impact. These adjustments are applied to estimate the economic impact of the Port of Hampton Roads, Virginia.

TL;DR: A port simulation model (Monte Carlo type) is presented to simulate the future economic port capacity to meet projected cargo demand and evaluates the port economics due to changes in the port capacity.
Abstract: A port simulation model (Monte Carlo type) is presented to simulate the future economic port capacity to meet projected cargo demand. The first part of the model determines the effects caused by the port capacity expansion. The second part evaluates the port economics due to changes in the port capacity. The simulation model was tested by applying it to the actual port expansion followed at the Port of Mobile in Alabama.

The Location of Services Involved with International Trade

TL;DR: In this article, the authors trace the location of a selection of these services in the USA and Australia, indicating a separation between services and negotiations on aspects of trade services, and new patterns of physical activity in trade.
Abstract: Services that link buyer and seller across nations and continents have long been a part of city and port development, but have not attracted much research interest, perhaps because they remain (like their statistical record) ‘invisible’. Technical and structural change in the organisation of shipping, reflected largely in containerisation, have changed the context for these services and they have responded in a variety of ways. Data in this paper trace the location of a selection of these services in the USA and Australia, indicating a separation between services and negotiations on aspects of trade services, and new patterns of physical activity in trade. It is suggested that this separation may be facilitated by the standardisation that has come with containerisation, the importance of intercorporate linkages, the role of official markets, and the application of modern communication technology. These aspects account for the clustering of services in large cities and their separation from day-to-day trad...

Abstract: A double solenoid valve especially for anti-lock braking (ABS) applications has a normally open conduit for connection to a first port fluidically in series with a normally closed conduit between second and third ports. A slow two-way path continuously connects the second port. The double valve when used in ABS can handle incipient locking, actual locking, quick releasing to normal after emergency anti-lock action, and purge modes.

TL;DR: A multi-port valve assembly for controlling the flow of fluid through a plurality of outlet ports is described in this article, where each valve member corresponds to each outlet port for controlling fluid flow through the respective port.
Abstract: A multi-port valve assembly for controlling the flow of fluid through a plurality of outlet ports. A valve housing defines a common inlet and a plurality of outlet ports. A valve member corresponds to each outlet port for controlling fluid flow through the respective port. Each valve member is independently adjustable for separately adjusting fluid flow characteristics through its respective port. All of the valve members are conjointly movable for controlling fluid flow through all the outlet ports simultaneously.

TL;DR: In this article, the main operating and maintenance features of containerhandling equipment are discussed and a training manual is developed for World Bank staff involved in the preparation and appraisal of port projects which include investment in container-handling systems.
Abstract: This training manual deals with the main operating and maintenance features of container-handling equipment. They have been developed for World Bank staff involved in the preparation and appraisal of port projects which include investment in container-handling systems. The materials will also be valuable to those senior policy makers and managers in the governments and port authorities of developing countries who are involved in the selection of equipment and the preparation and appraisal of projects submitted to the World Bank and other international lending agencies. The desired outcomes of the training are a more informed and productive communication between the principals involved in port container investment projects and an improvement in the equipment selection process. The materials will also focus attention on the equipment management function and assist port authorities and terminal operators to select the most appropriate equipment for the operating conditions and maintenance capabilities of their ports.

TL;DR: In this paper, the automatic processing of a vehicle entering into a reserved parking zone by reading out number plate information and deciding whether the vehicle is a reserved vehicle or an unreserved one is presented.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To attain the automatic processing of a vehicle entering into a reserved parking zone by reading out number plate information and deciding whether the vehicle is a reserved vehicle or an unreserved one. CONSTITUTION:Parking zone information is supplied from a display part 10 through a terminal equipment 8 set up on a place such as a telephone box other than the parking zone and park reserving information is inputted from a card insertion port 9 or a key operation part 11 to receive a parking request. Information such as the number plate of the vehicle is recorded in a portable card 12 of a user by a key operation part 11 in the terminal equipment 8. Number plate readers 4 are set up on the inlet 1 and outlet 5 of the parking zone, the number plate of the entered vehicle is read out and collated with that of the reserved vehicle, and when the number plate read out at the outlet coincides with the number read out at the inlet, entrance/exit processing such as the calculation of the parking time and parking fee of the vehicle concerned and the adjustment of the parking fee is automatically executed.

Trading and sailing board game

Andrew C. Milliken

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a board game for trading, negotiating, and sailing, where the game is played on a cargo sloop and the goal is to accumulate wealth through trading with other players.
Abstract: The board game apparatus is intended primarily to provide a game involving trading, negotiating, and sailing. In order that the principle of the invention can be readily understood, a single embodiment thereof is discussed. The object of the game is to accumulate wealth through transporting goods on a cargo sloop and trading with other players. The game apparatus allows the sloops to be realistically sailed from port to port purchasing and trading cargo. Movement of the sloop is governed by wind, tide, current and the skill of the player. An array of playing spaces arranged in a grid allows a plurality of paths between any two ports. Value of the cargo changes as it is transported from port to port increasing as the distance from the port of origin increases, which reflects the added cost of transportation. A doubling of cargo value occurs if the market for that commodity is cornered. Unforeseen events during the game may resupply cargo at ports. Thus, trading of cargo is stimulated. Eventually, cargo at the ports is depleted, sloops are removed from service, and the player with the greatest accumulated wealth wins the game.

Abstract: A convertible high or low pressure pilot valve adapted to selectively control fluid flow between a common port and a supply port or exhaust port by moving a band of orifices in a plunger that is slidably disposed within the valve past an O-ring seal disposed between the supply port and the exhaust port so as to establish fluid communication between the common port and the supply port whenever the band is aligned with the supply port through a unitary axial bore in the plunger that maintains fluid communication with the common port or between the common port and the exhaust port through the same axial bore, whenever the band is aligned with the exhaust port or to block fluid communication between the common port, the supply port, and the exhaust port whenever the band is disposed between the supply port and the exhaust port in such manner that the O-ring bridges the orifices in such band.
