TL;DR: A companion volume on seaports has been written to provide a practical, overall under standing of the elements of port operation and management of a competitive, profitable port authority as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Since the publication of my books Elements of Shipping and more recently Economics of Shipping Practice and Management, both selling in over 130 countries, I have received numerous requests both from home and abroad for a companion volume on seaports. This book has been written to provide a practical, overall under standing of the elements of port operation and management of a competitive, profitable port authority. It reflects the author's many years of experience in port and ship management, international trade and education. It deals in simple language with the role and function of seaports in a trading pattern, port investment criteria, port tariffs, free ports and free trade zones, port traffic control, budgetary control and marketing, port management structure and dock labour, computerization, cargo-handling equipment, the eco nomics of port design, the role of port cargo-handling organiza tions, the economics of international trade, finance of international trade, and many other aspects of this extensive subject. The import ance of complete professionalism in all areas of port practice as a means of providing the viable, high quality service required to sustain and expand international trade cannot be overemphasized. This book will help towards establishing that professionalism. The material assembled here is intended not only for students preparing for seaport examinations, but also for persons employed in port authorities. In short, it is an aide-memoire to those engaged in the industry throughout the world and may be regarded as 'the porr executive's handbook'."
TL;DR: The Mach operating system supports secure local communication within one node of a distributed system by providing protected communication abstraction that can be extended over a network by Network Server tasks.
Abstract: The Mach operating system supports secure local communication within one node of a distributed system by providing protected communication abstraction can be extended over a network by Network Server tasks. The network servers effectively act as local representatives for remote tasks by implementing an abstraction of Network Ports. To extend the security of the port-based communication abstraction into the network environment, the network servers must protect both the messages sent over the network to network ports and the access rights to network ports. This paper describes in detail the protocols used by the network servers to support security.

TL;DR: In this article, a distributed control switching system where the system control units cooperatively perform the terminating port determination function is described. But the control unit associated with the terminal does not know whether the call is a sequence call or a simple call.
Abstract: A distributed control switching system where the system control units cooperatively perform the terminating port determination function. The control unit associated with the terminating port stores sequence call data defining whether calls are to be completed to that terminating port or are to be forwarded to another directory number. Upon determining that a given call is a sequence call, the control unit associated with the original terminating port determines the terminating port defined by the second directory number and effects a reduction of the sequence call to a simple call between the originating port and the second terminating port. This is done either by transmitting a control message defining the originating and terminating ports to the control unit associated with the second terminating port or by returning the setup sequence to the control unit associated with the originating port which then frees any switching system resources previously allocated to the call and transmits the control message. In either case, the control unit associated with the second terminating port completes the call without knowing whether the call is a sequence call or a simple call completed to the original terminating port.
TL;DR: In this paper, a distributed control switching system where the system control units cooperatively perform the terminating port determination function is presented, where the calls to a given group necessarily require a control communication with the group controller which maintains the dynamic busy/idle data for the group and performs the hunting function to assign idle group members to calls.
Abstract: A distributed control switching system where the system control units cooperatively perform the terminating port determination function. Multi-port hunt groups having members that span a number of switching modules each having an associated control entity, are controlled in an efficient manner by assigning, for each multi-port hunt group, one of the switching modules as the group controller for that multi-port group. All calls to a given group necessarily require a control communication with the group controller which maintains the dynamic busy/idle data for the group and performs the hunting function to assign idle group members to calls.
TL;DR: In this paper, a technique for calibrating a dual six-port and four-port ANA so that the scattering parameters of two-port devices having any combination of connectors can be measured is described.
Abstract: A technique is described for calibrating a dual six-port & four-port ANA so that the scattering parameters of two-port devices having any combination of connectors can be measured. The technique is a generalization of the "thru-reflect-line" (TRL) calibration technique in which the "thru" is replaced with a second length of precision transmission line.
TL;DR: In this article, a plurality of port request control elements for generating specific request signals including a command level request signal to indicate the command level of a request received from the corresponding equipment, and a go signal indicating the availability of the apparatus and the subsystem in order to execute the command requested.
Abstract: The apparatus controls access to at least one subsystem in response to requests for access from a plurality of equipments operatively connected to a corresponding port of said apparatus. The requests for access have a plurality of command levels wherein the command levels have a fixed predetermined priority relative to each other. The apparatus comprises a plurality of port request control elements for generating a plurality of specific request signals including a command level request signal to indicate the command level of a request received from the corresponding equipment, and a go signal to indicate the availability of the apparatus and the subsystem in order to execute the command requested. An activity priority select control element receives the specific request signals, and processes the go signals from each of the port request control elements to grant access within a predetermined time period to the equipment connected to the port having the highest port priority within the highest command level. There is also included logic which maintains a table of port priority for each command level utilized to determine a port priority within a command level. The table of port priority corresponding to the command level which was granted access is conditionally rotated when an equipment is granted access.
TL;DR: In this paper, a broadcast pointer instruction has a first source operand (address pointer value) which is the starting address in a memory of message data to be broadcast to a number of processors through output ports.
Abstract: A broadcast pointer instruction has a first source operand (address pointer value) which is the starting address in a memory of message data to be broadcast to a number of processors through output ports. The broadcast pointer instruction has a first destination operand (first multibit mask), there being one bit position in the first mask for each one of the plurality of output ports. The address pointer value is loaded into each of the output ports whose numbers correspond to bit positions in the first mask that are set to be one, such that each output port that is designated in the first mask receives the starting address of the message data in the memory. A broadcast count instruction has a second source operand (a byte count value) equal to the number of bytes in the message data. The broadcast count instruction has a second destination operand (a second multibit mask), there being one bit position in the second mask for each one of the plurality of output ports. The byte count value is sent to each of the output ports whose numbers correspond to bit positions in the second mask register that are set to be one, such that each output port that is designated in the second mask receives the byte count value corresponding to the number of bytes in the message data that are to be transferred from the memory. Once the byte count is initialized, data are transferred from the starting address in memory over each output port designated in the masks, until the byte count is decremented to zero.
TL;DR: In this paper, a back plane uses n(n-1) bus lines to interconnect n ports and each port can transmit on any one of n-1 bus lines depending on the identity of the destination port.
Abstract: A switching system or local area network is non-blocking, transmit-secure and employs a star type topology. A back plane uses n(n-1) bus lines to interconnect n ports. Each port can transmit on any one of n-1 bus lines depending on the identity of the destination port. Likewise, each port can receive from any of n-1 bus lines, depending on the identity of the transmitting port. Signalling as well as data flow on the same bus lines. Each of the ports includes a dedicated microprocessor along with an arbitrator to resolve contention. The ports further have transmit and receive multiplexers coupled between the back plane and an associated work station or information source/sink.

TL;DR: Gutenberg is a port-based operating system being designed to study protection issues in distributed systems and privilege transfer is a means of providing servers access to the resources they need to perform their services.
Abstract: Gutenberg is a port-based operating system being designed to study protection issues in distributed systems. All shared resources are viewed as protected objects and hence can be assessed only via specific operations defined on them. Processes communicate and access objects through the use of ports. Each port is associated with an abstract data type operation and can be created by a process only if the process has the capability to execute the operation on the type. Thus, a port represents the privilege of the port's client process to request a service. Capabilities to create ports for requesting operations are contained in a capability directory, which is navigated by processes to gain these capabilities. Privilege transfer is a means of providing servers access to the resources they need to perform their services. In Gutenberg, privilege transfer is accomplished by allowing access to subdirectories of the capability directory and by passing capabilities, including port access capabilities, to processes via ports. It should be possible to revoke transferred privileges when breaches of trust are detected or suspected, when a period of time has passed beyond which the distributor of a privilege does not want the privilege shared, or when an error has been detected.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study of organic petrology gives an assessment of organic matter type and abundance, and the rank of possible petroleum source rocks in the Port Campbell area, which ranges from the Early Cretaceous to Pliocene in age.
Abstract: Sedimentary sequences in the Port Campbell area range from the Early Cretaceous to Pliocene in age. Two major groups are distinguished in the Cretaceous sequences. The Otway Group was deposited in a braided river fluviatile environment which is unconformable overlain by the fluvio-deltaic to shallow marine sequences of the Sherbrook Group. The Tertiary sequences are divided into Wangerrip Group (paralic to deltaic and shallow marine), Nirrandra Subgroup and Heytesbury Group (both marine environments)• The present study of organic petrology gives an assessment of organic matter type and abundance, and the rank of possible petroleum source rocks in the Port Campbell area. Organic matter in the Early Cretaceous-Tertiary sequences of the area is predominantly in a dispersed form but some thin coal seams also occur in the sequence. Inertinite is the dominant maceral in the dispersed organic matter (d.o.m.) but the liptinite and vitrinite which are present in the sequences probably have the most significant generation potential. The Eumeralla Formation is considered as the most effective source of hydrocarbon as the formation contains intervals with abundant organic matter and lies in the principal zone of oil generation (0.7%-0.9% Rvmax)• The next most
TL;DR: The commercial future of Port-Orford-cedar timber production is threatened by an aggressive root disease that reached the commercial timber as a direct consequence of the species' ornamental use as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: P orr-Orford-cedar grows naturally only in scattered stands, or as scattered individuals, in a small area of Oregon and California. Yet there has been worldwide distribution of both the plant and nat ive-grown wood, developing, as it were, a commercial \"split personality\" for the tree. In the 130 years since its discovery, the cedar has time and again proven its versatility, in its form as an ornamental, in its growth requirements, and in its recovery from repeated losses of a market, often in the face of developing technology. It became a major horticultural product, and continues as such, in Europe and New Zealand. The wood, once considered a \"critical material\" for the United States' efforts in the two world wars, is today virtually unknown in its land of origin. Despite its diverse potential uses, the present value of native Port-Orfordcedar wood depends entirely on traditional aesthetic values of Japanese society, which have resulted in a steady demand for this beautiful wood . The commercial future of PortOrford-cedar timber production is threatened by an aggressive root disease that reached the commercial timber as a direct consequence of the species' ornamental use. Whether the cedar will survive as a commercial timber depends on decisions made by American foresters today. 1
